Chp 6 Pt. 5 Maliyah’s Return
Davina“Damn it Maliyah! Open your eyes,” yells Aspen as he starts to perform CPR on my daughter. “Luna!?”I am in shock. I am struggling to focus on my labor as I am too worried about Maliyah. She can’t die, not after holding on for so long.“Luna! You need to push now!”“Come on love push. I’m right here.”I finally snap out of it and begin pushing as instructed. My world is crumbling right before my eyes. I can’t lose one child as I give birth to another. He can’t take them both from me. Derek is pouting nonsense next to me as I lock my gaze on Maliyah.“Damn it Maliyah, don’t you dare quit on me now,” growls out Aspen. “Push Luna!”I have to snap my focus away from Maliyah to push my son out. My heart is racing and I&rsq

Chp 7 Pt. 1 Maliyah’s Struggles
MaliyahIt’s been about three days since I woke up. Dr. Ase insists I still rest and use a wheelchair for the time being. I’ve been doing physical therapy but it’s mostly just stretches and mild strength training. Dr. Ase says I am not strong enough to walk yet which I think is a load of crap but I promised Aspen to listen to the doctor.Everyone has been tip toeing around me, especially after I snapped saying I didn’t want to celebrate my birthday. I just didn’t feel like it. I also don’t get straight answers to my questions and I still have yet to see uncle Owen. I really need to speak with him. I feel like there was something important I needed to tell dad about auntie Keila but I’m drawing a blank. “Penny for your thoughts?”I look up to find Aspen. He helps me out of the chair and places me in the grass. He knows I prefer to feel the earth under me

Chp 7 Pt. 2 Maliyah’s Struggles
DavinaI thought we were done with betrayals. I thought the remaining pack members were loyal. If elder Franklin could fool Aspen who is to stay there aren’t more like him? I know I am starting to get paranoid but I feel like I can’t trust anyone. “Calm down Davina. Just because we have another traitor doesn’t mean everyone is,” says Derek.“I can’t help but worry Derek. Your sister got killed, who is next?”“I know you are worried love. The twins and Aiden will have guards with them at all times, Maliyah too. If Aspen isn’t with her a warrior will be.”Derek and I arrive in front of the cells. I can feel his body tremble with anger. We thought it was his uncle or my brother’s fault for Keila’s death but it was someone much closer to home. Someone we trusted. Derek opens the doors and we can hear yelling.“You

Chp 7 Pt. 3 Maliyah’s Struggles
Maliyah After the execution I asked Aspen to take me to visit Malayah’s graves. I’ll want to stop my aunt Keila’s and uncle Owen’s as well but I need to see Malayah first. I am upset that I didn’t get to attend her funeral but I understand at the same time. They couldn’t just leave her like that. When we arrive in front of her grave, I set down her favorite flowers, pink dahlia’s. I can see dad planted dahlia’s near her grave. Aspen sets me down in the grass and takes a seat with me. A few more memories have resurfaced recently and I have been waiting to get Aspen alone. I am not sure I want to talk to my parents about this yet. “You’ve had that look all day Maliyah. What is it?” I quickly avoid Aspen’s gaze. I am not sure I want to talk about this to him as well. “Maybe he can help,” says Terra, encouraging me. “I….I know what Cedar saw Aspen.” “Oh.” “The things is though, I saw something else in my future from what Cedar saw. I don’t know what that means but that means ther

Chp 7 Pt. 4 Maliyah’s Struggles
MaliyahToday I again have physical therapy. We’ve moved on from stretches and strength training to walking. I thought I would enjoy learning to walk again but I was wrong. It has been more difficult than I thought it would be and at times I want to break something cause it hurts.“Alright Maliyah, grab both bars and bring yourself to the end,” says Tanisha.I just stare at the bars, my bitter enemy at the moment. I really don’t feel like trying today. I feel like I’ll never walk normal again. Aspen has been coming to my appointments and watches from the corner. He normally doesn’t get involved but for some reason this time he does. He doesn’t say a word as he places his arms under my armpits and forces me to stand. I don’t have a choice but to grab the bars as he slowly releases me. I glare at him as he begins to slowly back away. “Aspen, I don’t

Chp 7 Pt. 5 Maliyah’s Struggles
Maliyah Today is the day. It’s been a week since I started riding Beauty daily and I have almost made it to the end of those stupid bars. I am determined to get out of this wheelchair. If I can make it to the end of the bars I can start using a cane and that is better than the wheelchair. “Terra, do you think we’ll be able to shift soon?” “I have fully healed Maliyah, so I can but do you think you’ll be able to handle a shift?” “I think so.” “Alright, if you make it to the end of the bars today we’ll do it.” I am so excited as I wheel myself out the elevator and meet my family in the dining room. “Morning everyone.” “Liyah!” The twins come running at me and climb up in my chair. I’ve been visiting them more often and try to play with them as best I can. Another reason I want out of the dumb chair. I want to be able to run with them. “I’ve missed you two as well. It’s been what, ten minutes since I saw you upstairs,” I laugh “Can we go riding with you today,” asks Accalia. I

DavinaIt’s been hard not feeling like something is missing since Maliyah woke up, but I think we’re all coming to terms with Malayah, Keila and Owen being gone. We will always miss them but everyday seems to get a bit easier to try and move on. Maliyah still uses a cane to get around but at least she is walking. Tanisha has assured us Maliyah should fully recover as long as she keeps going to physical therapy. Maliyah has yet to tell us about her visions but Aspen told us everything. They conflict one another and we don’t know how to make the one we want come true. At least we know that Cedar’s vision was incomplete and may not even come true. For now, we are just happy to see Maliyah getting back into a normal routine with the addition of bring flowers to the cemetery at least once a week. I am not sure how long she’ll keep that up but we don’t bother her about it.

Davina“Wait! Stop Amara,” says uncle Gabriel. Her look softens and Derek hands me a dress and the boys turn around. Amara shifts and puts the dress on. “Where are my parents Gabriel!”Gabriel looks at her with sad eyes before answering her. I know she will not take this news well.“Your father is gone and your mother is missing.”“We have to go back now! I told you I didn’t want to leave!”“We will return first thing tomorrow. Hopefully we will find survivors and if we do, your people are going to need a leader Amara,” Derek tries to reason with her. However, she is far from being able to leader her people. She is just a child.“My brother can do that. Where is he? Did he return home?”“I never saw your brother Amara. Ghalen is also missing

Chp 8 Pt. 3 The Pride
Davina The minute we arrived in the pride’s territory we were all in shock. Bodies of men, women and children litter the ground. Smoke rises out of their homes as the fires had died out. Mark, Derek and the few warriors we brought begin checking everyone just to be sure we don’t ignore someone injured. Amara rushes to her pack house with me and Maliyah following.“Mom!”Amara is searching for her mother while Maliyah and I check to see if there are any survivors. Dead bodies are scattered throughout the house and so far there are no survivors. I was hoping we would find someone, at least a handful but so far we haven’t found even one. “Mom, everyone is dead. There are no survivors in this house,” says Maliyah quietly.I sigh as we see Amara head outside. We follow her and see a very beautiful garden full of native plants and flowers to Africa. T

Chp 8 Pt. 4 The Pride
AspenDavina prepares to take the group of survivors back to the Palemetto pack with Derek. Maliyah and I are helping Amara and Ghalen ensure there are no other survivors. We are also helping with building a giant pyre to burn the bodies of those lost. Davina asked us to make sure we get everyone’s name to put up a memorial wall. I can’t believe how many lives were lost. Not even a quarter of the children survived. “Ghalen, I have all our pack records and other important documents loaded into the Jeep. I also grabbed our family albums and family heirlooms,” says Amara as she hands a ring to Ghalen. It appears to be a bone tribal ring. The ring appears to be mostly black with a pattern I am unfamiliar with. It must’ve belonged to their father as Ghalen slips it on, his gaze lingering on the ring.
