Chapter 31
Jared was going to make an idiot out of himself over his neighbour, he just knew it. She was young, pretty and refined. Jared was older, rougher and uglier. She was definitely out of his league. She was also an innocent. Maybe not a virgin, but close. He shouldn't touch her. He didn't fool himself into believing otherwise just because she was a phone sex operator. His budding fascination with Amy was the reason he found himself in his garage the next morning at 4:30 AM, a sleepy scowl on his face as he searched for the companion helmet to his bike. The evening before, as he was preparing to leave the house after meeting Amy's family, he'd offered her a ride to work in the morning. She'd grinned at him and told him she had to be at her job by 5 AM. The whole idea of getting up that early for any reason was unholy to him and he was not a lazy man. Just a guy that liked his beauty sleep. Of course, he knew why Amy did it. She was a woman with children to take care of. A woman who w

Chapter 32
That first ride with Amy was one of the best of his life. He'd always been a loner and his bike was a symbol of his independence. No one rode with him, which is why the helmet had been in storage for so long. He only bought it because at the time he got the bike he'd had a girlfriend of about six weeks and contemplated allowing her to ride on his bike. Luckily, they broke up before that happened. He hadn't really been into her, but he thought he should give the whole boyfriend thing a try.Now that Amy was in his life, he was realizing why the girlfriend/boyfriend thing hadn't worked for him in the past. He'd been waiting for her and no one else would do. Somehow, subconsciously, he'd known. He'd been waiting for the girl next door to grow up.They arrived at the factory far sooner than Jared would've liked. He would have been a happy guy if their ride could've lasted forever. Amy climbed off the bike, just as awkwardly as she'd climbed on it, but her face was a smiling ray of suns

Chapter 33
Life stopped being perfect when Jared arrived early at the jobsite office. Enrico was already in the trailer waiting for Jared and Vincent. Enrico worked with Jared, helping him with security. While Vincent ran the entire operation, Jared's job was security and managing the work crews. The legitimate side of their business. Jared also did the occasional odd job that could be considered illegal, sometimes running point when Vincent wasn't available. Which had been happening more and more lately, since Vince was settling down with Jenna and the kids.Jared raised a brow at Enrico as he pushed the door open to the trailer. He'd been expecting to have a few minutes to himself. Grab a coffee and settle into the boss's seat to go over the security details before Vince came in. Instead he was met with a grouchy, tattooed ex-biker."What's up with you?" Jared asked, dumping his helmet on the couch."The McDonald's up the road is closed for renovations. Couldn't get my morning breakfast

Chapter 34
Amy had been looking forward to going over to Jared's all day. She spent the entire day, even the hours at work, contemplating what she was going to wear, what she was going to say, and how she was going to get her sisters to behave without embarrassing her.She texted Teagan the dinner invite, but he didn't text back. Amy was disappointed but not surprised. Teagan had been growing progressively more difficult over the past few months, a development that worried her, but according to their social services worker wasn't uncommon. He'd experienced the same trauma as the rest of them but being older than the younger two made him more aware of what had happened. Rather than bonding with Amy, as she'd hoped he would, he was pulling away.Amy did a little twirl in front of her mirror. Jared had seen her wearing sexy, her crop top and short shorts, he'd seen her wearing slutty, her teeny tiny bikini, now he was going to see her sweet and summery side. She chose a floaty turquoise dress wi

Chapter 35
Jared held Amy against his chest, running his hand over her hair and giving her the time she needed to calm down. Jared was getting the distinct impression that Amy had a lot going on in her life, between her difficult brother and her murderous father. Though her two sisters seemed to listen to her, they were still a handful. From what he'd learned so far, Amy helped them with their homework, fed and clothed them, made sure that they were able to get to their play dates on time, even if that meant busing them there and then busing them home.Jared had the intense urge to make Amy's life better. But they barely knew each other, and he couldn't just take over a woman's life, adopt her siblings, and possibly make more babies with her, without at least some discussion with the woman in question. For now, Jared would feed Amy and her sisters, and they would worry about the rest later. He gently disengaged from the hug, set Amy away from him and swept her with a look. He set her hair

Chapter 36
Jared followed Amy back to her house where she spent half an hour helping her sisters get ready for bed. She threw a distracted smile at him as she went streaking through the living room in search of a stuffed unicorn named Clarence. Then, she ran back through the living room with a multicoloured toy in her hands.Jared grinned to himself, stretching his arms across the back of the sofa. He didn't mind waiting one bit. He was enjoying this small glimpse into the domesticity that went on next door to him. Finally, after another five minutes, Amy dropped onto the sofa next to him sighing loudly. She looked tired but satisfied, as though she loved the bedtime routine. Jared wanted nothing more than to drag her across his lap and plunder her with kisses. Maybe even go to second base and put a hand up her shirt. But first, he needed some information. "Your dad called today. Want to tell me about it?"Amy's face dropped in disappointment and she shrank back on the sofa. Jared didn't

Chapter 37
The following weeks were some of the best that Amy could remember. Jared came over almost every day, his hands piled high with something new. Either dinner, toys for the girls, or something to make Amy's life easier. It became such a routine that Millie and Sarah would watch out the front window expectantly each afternoon for Jared's arrival home from work. He waved at the girls, going to his place for a shower and then making his way over to theirs.Even Teagan was beginning to like Jared. Or, more like he met and worshipped Jared's bike. Jared also promised to take him for a ride, which helped ease any potential animosity. Teagan had come home for more clothing to take over to his friend's house and had walked in on Jared and Amy sitting on the sofa watching TV. At first, he'd been standoffish and angry. His usual attitude. But once the guys started talking bikes, tattoos and other things a teenage boy might be interested in, Teagan loosened up enough to actually have a respectf

Chapter 38
As if reading her mind, Jenna reached out to touch the back of her hand. "Hey, it's not a big deal. Honestly. I think it was a mutual split. They tried dating but were too different to make it work. They each went their separate ways, no hard feelings. They still talk when Jared comes over to the house."Somehow, that last bit didn't make Amy feel better. "Jared and I don't have much in common," Amy mumbled.Jenna blushed and set her fork down, a worried expression on her face. "I'm sorry, I'm really bad at this. I shouldn't have said anything. Honestly, there's nothing going on between Jared and Sharon. He has no feelings for her other than friendship. Trust me. What he feels for you is way different. It's like, when he's on the job or at the house his mind is always on you and there's always this half smile on his face. Not something I've ever seen before. He adores you and dotes on your sisters. You have nothing to worry about."Amy sighed deeply and shook her head as if tryin

Chapter 39
Jared was in the middle of explaining to a rapt audience of two young girls how it was entirely possible to have pancakes, bacon, scrambled eggs and all the amazing breakfast food they could possibly want, for supper. Apparently, this was not something their family had ever done. Breakfast for supper was a go-to meal for Jared. It was easy, comforting and filled his belly with bacon. Jared loved bacon almost as much as he loved sex.Jared's brain immediately latched on to Amy and he nearly groaned out loud, closing his eyes for a few seconds as her luscious curves filled his mind. Then, he gave himself a sharp reminder that there were two children in his kitchen and his brain absolutely could not go there. As he turned back to the stove to check on the bacon, as if she had been conjured up from his imagination, Amy came hurtling into the kitchen."Amy!" Millie called out and threw herself at her sister. Millie was the youngest and more prone to wanting physical contact with he

Chapter 40
Jared called Avery, head of jobsite security. He'd asked Avery to look into Michael. Avery picked up on the second ring. He didn't even pause before launching into an explanation. "Just heard your girl's place got broken into. I'm on my way over, gotta talk to you." He sounded out of breath, like he was running. Jared heard the slam of a car door. "Got some bad news. Michael Funk was released from prison this morning. According to his attorney there's evidence his wife slipped and fell in the bathtub and that his client was falsely accused.""That's bullshit," Jared exploded. "Amy heard and saw what happened.""Yeah, her statement held a lot of sway over the jury during the trial. I think it's probably what got him put away."Jared's gut twisted as he imagined an 18-year-old Amy going through police interrogation and then being questioned by lawyers. The whole process must've been exhausting and terrifying."Still doesn't make sense, man. Even if his conviction was overturne
