Chapter 11: You're not Welcome
My alarm rings before I'm ready. Probably because it goes off at six in the damn morning. Even in college I tried not to schedule my classes before ten and I sought jobs with afternoon shifts. To say I'm not a morning person is an understatement. I loathe mornings as if they were put on this earth to make my life hell. In fact, nobody has ever shown me proof they weren't made to ruin my life. I mean has anyone seen a 3 a.m.? Does it exist? It shouldn't.I roll off the couch and check my phone to make sure Vincent hasn't sent me any new messages throughout the night. One day with him and I'm already working on a phobia of having my phone sit too long between message checks.Ashley sleeps soundly wrapped in my covers on my bed when I check on her. I open my squeaky closet door enough to grab a few items to wear to work. She snorts and rolls to her side as I walk out of the room.Showers should wake you up, but when you take them as hot as I do, they have the reverse effect. My ey

Chapter 12: Prison Isn't Worth It.
"I told you. Your breakfast."I follow him because as an assistant—especially one with nothing else to do—it seems the thing to do. He sits in his chair unwrapping the breakfast sandwich and taking the lid off the coffee. He sniffs it and his nose crinkles in disgust. Tapping the cover back on top he hands it across the space to me."Don't screw with me. This isn't coffee. Coffee comes black. This is sludge. I don't know what kind of man you take me for, Ms. Marshal, but I don't drink that. Everyone in this building knows how I take my coffee. You should learn too.""Okay," I say with my teeth clenched together. The secretary on the fourth floor and I need to have a chat. I can't believe somebody would deliberately lie about something as stupid as coffee. He eyes the egg sandwich and nods his head in acceptance. "This is okay. Thank you." My cheeks flush with the fact he said thank you. We're only two days into this job and already I feel like a schoolgirl waiting for her teach

Chapter 13: Prison Might be Worth It
Hurry up, bitch. I'm hungry.Okay, my stomach doesn't call me a bitch, but if she could talk, I'm sure she would. She gurgles and growls again, the sound loud in the otherwise quiet portion of Vincent's floor. After a turbulent afternoon as his assistant where his mood ranged from angry to angrier, I worry at one point he'll slam open his office door and yell at me for being too loud.I tear off a tiny chunk of my Snicker's bar and while hunched, partially hidden behind my desk, shove it in my mouth. Damn chocolate is amazing. I've been parceling out the king-sized bar since 2 p.m. It's now almost seven and if I don't feed my stomach something real, she is liable to revolt at any moment.Nowhere in the thirteen-page contract human resources had me sign did it mention I'd have to work until 7 p.m., but Vincent is still here, therefore so am I. At least until I pass out from hunger. I haven't had the courage to break open the bottle of Mountain Dew fearful it will be against one

Chapter 14: Bruises
Anger colors my cheeks pink. How dare he imply I have an issue with being on time. I was early for my interview. He's never given me a chance to get here on time. Screw getting fired, this man is a total asshole. "What would Davis do if I didn't leave my apartment one morning? Would he come in and get me?" I ask with my arms crossed.Vincent grunts as if it's not a terrible idea. "He'd do what he needed to get the job done.""What does that mean?"He hits the button on the elevator and the doors open. "It means don't test me, Ms. Marshal, or we'll both find out."And then he's off. Not another word out of him as the doors close and the elevator rises. For a man concerned I left a driver sitting here until seven, it doesn't go unnoticed he didn't hold the elevator for me. The building itself has three elevator shafts, but I learned only one goes as high as Vincent's office floor and the two floors he uses as a personal residence. You can only access his office side with the spec

Chapter 15: Homeless
Red and blue lights with matching sirens swarm to the parking lot and a barrage of men in uniform run at us from multiple directions. Today they show up quickly. Thank goodness. Two officers, one a man and the other a woman draw their guns. They force Davis to step away from Jonathan's body with his hands in the air. I slip on the recently watered grass and sit next to Ashley as she positions herself higher and wraps her arms around my body, holding tightly.I'm focused on Ashley when the group of police begin yelling at one another. Jonathon jerks in their arms as they try to put handcuffs on him. He yells and two cops back up, giving him room to make an escape. He takes off running and three officers peruse him. Jonathan runs at a full sprint out of the apartment parking lot. He darts to the right, heading for a higher-class neighborhood that butts up to our complex. The same officer from yesterday, Officer Allen, helps Ashley and me up off the ground."This is not how I want

Chapter 16: Check Out the New Girl
"No, we plan to look at places this weekend. But since it's just the two of us," I leave out the part about Ashley living off student loans while she studies for the bar and bringing in no real income, "we'll have to go a lot farther out than our current place to find something affordable."Like really far out.I considered asking my parents for help, but I know what they'll tell me. It's time to move back home. They've been waiting for me to mess up enough I'm forced to move back since the day I left. My mother hasn't moved a single thing in my room because she thinks I'll be there sooner rather than later. Whenever she brings it up, she reminds me it's "just a generational thing" and not a reflection on my inability to find a good job. What she forgets is that I won't be able to find a job in Riverwood, which will allow me to pay back my student loans. These aren't regular college loans. I have MBA loans. I need to make decent money. The largest store is the local Meijer, a gro

Chapter 17: Demands
The pile of clothing thrown in the corner of my room grows as the ones in my closet never seems to decrease. Our move out of the townhouse will be quick since we don't have much stuff between us and even less time to find a place.Between asking at school and visiting our local grocery store, we came up with nine boxes to pack. Four for her, four for me, and one to throw in the various crap we've stashed around the place. Most of the household stuff is Jonathan's, but I don't plan to leave without my bright pink "you're special" unicorn mug.Trying to make a huge shitload of clothing fit into four boxes is not how I planned to spend my Saturday, but it's a good time to make a pile for donation.Or I can throw things in trash bags and move it that way. Either way works.Trash bags."I'm so sorry, Kens. Do you want two of my boxes?" Ashley apologizes for the nine hundredth time. She doesn't walk all the way into my room, probably fearful I'll put her to work packing. It's a w

Chapter 18: Are Those Balls?
"Ashley," I yell and go in search of her to pass on the bad news. Looks like she's on her own for this packing at least for a little while. There's not time to change my clothes into something more acceptable. Every second I waste getting this suit to Vincent is another second he can think of new work punishments for me. I slip on a pair of tennis shoes I've left by the front door and grab my purse on the way out. Sweats and a heavily worn t-shirt from my undergrad university will have to do as business casual. This morning as we apartment shopped, I dressed nicely, but I have a rule that when you're home jeans can fuck off. The one upside to getting a place with just Ashley that as soon as I walk in the apartment, I will be able to strip. Something I couldn't do with Jonathan living here.I unlock the Equinox, my movements a little unfamiliar since it's been almost a week since I've driven. Only when I'm on the road and a few miles away do I realize how much I miss operating a v

Chapter 19: Unexpected Questions
Less than twenty-four hours and I'm on my second ridiculous request from Valiant. In front of the large glass doors of the Valiant skyscraper I'm smart enough to wait for the security guard to open the door."Mr. Valiant said he will be right down. You are to wait here," a different security guard than the one who let me have free access upstairs yesterday says. The way his eyes linger across my body gives me chills before my cheeks turn red. What did Valiant tell him about why I had to wait in the lobby?I dressed today as per Mr. Valiant's instructions. The black pants and matching jacket, which I haven't buttoned, doesn't look hussy, but the guard's gaze make me feel dirty. Of course he probably had questions about why someone he's never met before is here on a Sunday morning and not allowed to go upstairs.Whatever. Who cares what he thinks? I just hope whatever this is gets done as fast as possible. Ashley and I still need to find a place to live. Rather than apartment shop,

Chapter 20: Sign My Life Away
I roll my eyes and then give a silent thanks to the sky he's already ahead of me and doesn't see. The most surprising thing is that he didn't already own it. Valiant is slacking. There's a rumor he owns half the buildings downtown, even a few used by state employees. Real estate such as office space and apartment buildings make up a large portion of the assets Valiant started with so it wouldn't surprise me if the rumors were true.Valiant holds open the door, and I walk in to be greeted by a smiling woman in a cute spring dress. White fabric with little pink flowers all over it in a light shade make her look absolutely gorgeous. I dressed for powerful professional and here she is likely going to an afternoon tea party. I didn't even curl my hair, choosing instead to wear it straight and loose. She holds a water bottle out to Valiant. Water dribbles off the edges and falls to the tile floor. "Water, Mr. Valiant?" she asks, her smile never wobbling as she speaks. It can't be human.
