Chapter 61
I wiped my tears with my t-shirt after I'd pulled into the garage that evening.Taking a few deep breaths, I composed myself outside in the breeze way before I opened the door to go inside. As soon as I walked in, I was immediately overwhelmed by the smell of something delicious.I walked into the kitchen to see Luca standing over the stove, stirring something in a pot."Are you making... actual food?" I asked, eyes wide.He laughed at this."This is a recipe my mom used to make for us; reserved only for special occasions. Her grandmother, who was from Sorrento, used to make it for her!"He looked down anxiously at whatever was simmering in the pot."I feel like I've probably fucked it up.," he admitted, laughing."It smells amazing," I said assuring."It should be almost done. I figured we could eat out on the deck, if that's okay."I turned to look outside and my jaw dropped.I slowly walked towards the open deck doors, seeing the table laid out with a white table cloth, candles, si

"How about this one?"I held up the hanger to my neck, the dress it held splaying across my body."It's too Laura Ingalls," Norah commented, waving her hand.I put it back on the rack, continuing to sort through the dresses. Letting out a long, exasperated sigh, I pulled out another dress."This one?""Too J-Lo," she said, shaking her head."Is that a bad thing?""Not if you're looking to be Carrie from the Pack, but I thought we were looking for dresses appropriate for Luna to be inducted in."I rolled my eyes, laughing, as I put the dress back on the rack. We had been looking all day for something I could wear to the induction ceremony the next night. We had been to five different stores and still had no luck. We were digging through racks at a high-end store in a last resort to find something."What about this one?"I turned to see Hanna standing a few rows down in the store, holding up a long, mint green satin dress."That one's pretty," Norah said.I nodded, walking over to her.

Norah and Hanna were on their feet before I could say anything else.We sprinted out of the diner, passing the waitress who was on her way to our table with our food as we were on our way out the door. Running to Luca's Jeep, which was parked on the curb, I got into the driver's seat and started the engine. I nearly hit the car that was parked in front of us as I slammed my foot down on the gas pedal, swerving from the parking lane into the street. I heard several cars honking behind us as I drove away quickly.Looking in the rearview mirror, I glanced back at the bus stop to see Alpha Reid was gone.Had I just imagined it?"Carrie, watch out!" Norah screamed from the passenger seat.My eyes returned to the road in front of me to see Alpha Reid standing in the middle of the street. I slammed on the breaks and the Jeep skidded across the pavement, stopping right in front of him. I gulped, noticing the dark circles around his brown eyes and the way his once tan-complected face was now p

We drove for a few more minutes until we reached the tower, parking in the road behind Bates's Jeep.I followed Luca up to the door, Lincoln waiting for us there."Everything is set up. We're just waiting for Blaine," he said as we walked inside. We walked up the staircase to the top floor where Bates was shooting wad of notebook paper into a trash bin."Heard you had an interesting day," he said to me, smiling as he turned to see us walk in.I just nodded, taking a deep breath as I sat down.A few minutes later, Blaine and Lincoln walked up the staircase together.Lincoln looked at Bates."Is she ready?" He asked.Bates nodded.Lincoln opened his laptop and began to set up the video call. It rang a few times before she answered. Her face appeared on the screen and I raised an eyebrow. She looked nothing like Bates. She had dark, straight hair that was cut to her chin with blunt bangs that nearly covered her eyebrows. She was pale and extremely thin, her ultra-defined collarbones expo

After Clara disconnected the call, we all sat in silence for a few moments, letting her information settle in."I'll go ahead and connect with Ben so we can get the remainder of the infrared cameras set up along the gates," Lincoln said."I'll order more motion sensors," Blaine added."We can get those up and running by tomorrow evening, at the latest. I've got a guy in town who can get them to me by morning."Luca nodded before turning to Bates."Call an Elders meeting for tomorrow morning at five," he said."We're going to figure out a way to get everyone within the gates. Let them know we're going to start daily temperature checks and to be brainstorming ideas to acquire and log the information."Bates nodded."Keep everyone on high alert for the next twenty-four hours,'' Luca continued, speaking to all three of them."We'll convene again tomorrow before the elders meeting."They all nodded, pulling out their phones to contact the necessary people.Luca stood up, turning to me."Le

I turned him around and placed a hand on either side of his face."I'm sorry you've had to deal with this all night," I said."But this could have been resolved if you had told me sooner.""And what? Cause a scene in front of my sisters or Lincoln, Bates, and Blaine?""We had plenty of time to talk about it in the car after we dropped Norah off," I pointed out."What were you going to do about it? You can't shower yet, you didn't have a change of clothes..." he countered.I stopped for a moment to think about it."I know I'm new to this whole Alpha's-mate-scent-thing," I admitted."But if he just hugged me and his scent was all over me, wouldn't you fucking me in the backseat of your truck have covered it up?"He gave me a stern look at the turn of conversation.I held up my hands in surrender."I mean, I would've gladly done that even if you hadn't offered an explanation. I've been wanting to since you drove me here from Oregon," I continued. He rolled his eyes but I could tell he wa

I needed a nap. After a full day, filled with training with Fallon and babysitting with Cristina, I had just enough time to get home to make myself dinner before Norah came over that evening to help me get ready for the induction ceremony. She had Hanna and Aubrey in tow, who immediately went into the pantry for snacks."You couldn't at least say 'hi' first?" Norah asked them, pointing to me.I just laughed."Where's Torrey?" I asked.Norah rolled her eyes."Still up Nathan's ass... or, rather, he's up hers," she laughed.Luca, who was sitting on the couch with his iPad, gave her a perturbed look, putting his hands over his ears."I didn't want to hear that." he said sternly."She's my sister.""She's mine too," Norah argued."You just need to come to terms with reality."He just shook his head and got up to scroll on the tablet elsewhere."So," Norah said, turning back to me."Where's the dress?"I led her into our bedroom where the mint green dress was hanging on the back of the clo

"What are you talking about?"Norah sighed."He's taking you on a trip. You guys are leaving after the ceremony."My eyes widened."What?!"She held a finger to her lips."You can't tell him you know; it was supposed to be a surprise," she whispered."Where are we going?" I asked her."I'm not telling you," she said stubbornly."He told me to pack the bag so I did and you better not open it."I stared at her, blank-faced."I did pack your lingerie," she said teasingly."I couldn't help but notice it was still wrapped up in the box."Norah pulled me out into the bedroom as Aubrey came back with their dresses, each of them taking a turn changing in the closet. I heard Luca walking down the hallway, stopping at the bedroom door."Amore, we've got-"He stopped mid-sentence when he saw me, his jaw going slack as he stared at the dress."-to go," he finished slowly."Get out, you choad!" Hanna yelled at him."You're not supposed to see her until later."His jaw dropped as he turned to her.

I didn't have time to let anything sink in before Luca was pulling me away."That was the single weirdest thing I've ever done in my life," I said, following him down the moonlit path back to the truck."That man is not marrying us."Luca laughed.I turned to look behind us, seeing Norah wave. I returned her wave, Bates waving back to me as well."What are we doing?" I asked."We're going away for a few days," Luca said."Back to the cabin?"He shook his head, smiling."Where are we going then?" I asked.Luca turned to me."Am I not allowed to be spontaneous?" He asked.I leveled a hard stare."The last time you did something spontaneous at midnight, I ended up being scared half to death on the floor of my patio while a stranger pinned me to the ground," I said bluntly.Luca rolled his eyes."I'm never living that down, am I?""Not anytime soon," I assured him, causing him to laugh. When we got to the truck, Luca opened my door for me. As I sat down, he reached around me and pulled a

I put my green dress back on for dinner that evening.Luca drove us out to a posh, upscale restaurant that was perched right on the water. Tables were set out along a long pier, overlooking the fading sun that set over the ocean. It wasn't until we were seated at our table that I realized it was the first real date Luca and I had been on.When I pointed this out, he grimaced."Yeah, I could be better at that," he said."I wasn't saying it in a negative way," I said quickly."I just meant that it's crazy how much we've been through and this is the first time we've gone out somewhere, just the two of us."He chuckled."I guess it is a little weird when you think about it," he admitted."It feels like we've been together a lot longer than a month."I nodded in agreement.A few moments later, a waiter came over to take our drink order. I bit the inside of my cheek as Luca ordered a three-hundred and fifty dollar bottle of wine.He must have seen the look on my face when he turned back to
