Lianna gets out of the cab, pulling her jacket closer to her body. It is freezing tonight. The cab driver asks for the money and she opens up her small bag. She hopes she has some money with her.
“Oi, don’t worry about that. I will sort it out,” a man says from the entrance of the building. Lianna watches as a broad-shouldered man comes trudging toward her. He stops next to her and holds a few dollars out to the driver. The driver takes the money and bids them good night.
“This way,” the man instructs and Lianna follows the man to the building. They get inside the building and Lianna realizes that it is a gym. Why did this guy ask her here?
She scans the place and sees William punching one of the bags. The white bag is covered in red marks. Is it blood?
“I apologize for the abrupt invitation. You see, I am not supposed to talk to you.” Lianna turns her head slightly to look at the man. He has a glowering look on his face. He folds his hands in front of him and leans back.
“I am Blake, that there’s man’s bodyguard.” He points to William. Lianna notices the man’s thick accent. It sounds like a broken British accent. He kind of sounds like the guys from “Peaky Blinders”.
“Usually, he listens to me, but today is not that day. He has been here for hours and I cannot get him to go back to your apartment. If you could, maybe talk some sense into that thick head of his. He is being a cunt,” Blake says with a rough voice.
Lianna lets out a scared laugh and looks at William. Where did William get this guy? Lianna nods her head and starts toward William, but Blake calls her back.
“Right, I am going. Get a taxi back to your place. Don’t get into trouble. I’m supposed to be at home tonight, but this fucker had other plans. All right?” Lianna nods her head and Blake bows his head. He turns around and trudges out through the doors. That is the weirdest man Lianna has ever met, but he seems genuine.
Lianna shakes her head and walks to William. The closer she gets, the clearer she sees the blood on the punching bag. Her eyes flicker to William’s hands and she notices that he is bleeding through his wrapping.
“William?” she asks with a hesitant voice. He only responds by hitting the bag again. “William?” she asks louder. He continues to punch the bag, this time letting out louder grunts. She looks to the side and takes a steadying breath. Blake was right, he is being difficult. Whatever happened must be unspeakable.
Lianna counts his punches and tries to recognize a pattern so that she can interfere without getting hurt. She sees an opening and steps in between William and the bag, holding her hands out. She mentally begs not to get hit.
William staggers back slightly when he notices her. The punching bag bumps against her back.
“Get lost,” he hisses at her as he tries to shove her to the side. Lianna does not budge, placing her hands on his chest to push him back. William lets out a frustrated groan. “I said leave.”
“Come on, William. Let’s go home. This is not good for anyone, especially not you. Look,” Lianna says as she gestures with her head to his hands. “You’re bleeding.” William tries to shove her again and Lianna almost loses her footing.
Lianna squares her shoulders and looks William in the eyes. William’s hands curl into fists and Lianna notices him tensing.
“Just leave me alone!” William shouts and it looks like he is going to lift his hand. Lianna flinches out of instinct, closing her eyes and stepping back against the bag. She trips over her own feet and almost falls, but William grabs her arm.
Lianna opens her eyes to see William’s face painted with disbelief and shock.
She softly thanks him as she removes her arm from his grip and stands straight. William is frozen, staring at her. Lianna’s breath is unsteady as the adrenaline leaves her body.
“Why- Why did you flinch?” William asks, his voice barely a whisper. Lianna takes a step closer to William, but he gives a step back. Lianna frowns as she notices his hands shaking.
“William? Are you okay?” Her hands move to his face. She takes his face in her hands and looks into William’s eyes. Tears are hiding in his eyes and Lianna forces him to look at her.
“Why did you flinch?” he repeats. He struggles to keep eye contact. “Did you think . . . “ he trails off. “Did you think I was going to hit you?” Lianna shakes her head slowly, his face still in her hands.
“No, it was just a reaction. Come on, let’s go home,” she says, rubbing small circles on his cheeks with her thumbs. William moves away from her and turns his back on her. He grabs his bag on the floor and hurries toward the exit.
Did Lianna really think he would hit her? Why would she think that? Is he becoming like his father? He would not have hit her, he knows that. He cannot become like his father. He cannot. Why did she think he would hit her?
The cold air outside gives him a calmness for a second. He takes a breath, the tears threatening to fall. He shakes his head and wipes his eyes with the back of his hand. He needs to get away from this.
“William, wait up. Hey,” Lianna shouts. She stops next to him and puts her arms around herself. William ignores her as he calls for a cab. One stops next to them and William gets in without a word. Lianna follows him into the backseat. She watches him while he gives the address. He turns his face away from her to stare out of the window. Lianna crosses her arms and also turns to stare at the cars passing them.
William is silent all the way back to her apartment, but the silence is different than when they got back from his family house. He seems more scared than when they drove back. He seems almost irrational.
William’s thoughts are spiraling and he tries to think of something to calm him, but everything is a mess. He managed to make a mess of everything. Why did he have to see Isaac getting hit? And why the hell does he have to put up with another woman? They all think they can change him, and be his savior when he lets them into his life. Lianna is no different.
Once they enter the apartment, William heads to the bedroom, but Lianna grabs his arm. He sighs mentally. He does not have the strength for a pep talk. He cannot deal with this now. Lianna takes William’s arm and leads him to the island in the kitchen. She pulls out a chair and gestures for him to sit. William hesitates. “Please?” she asks with a soft voice. William scoffs and turns to the bedroom. He cannot stand the pity on Lianna’s face. “Sit,” she demands and William pauses. He slowly turns around and sees Lianna searching for something under the sink. With a frustrated sigh, he sits down. Lianna grabs the first aid kit from under the sink. She makes her way back and sits across from William. Great, now she is going to patch him up. William places his hands on the table and watches Lianna remove his wrapping. The sooner she can get this over with, the sooner he can leave. For good. After Lianna has unwrapped his hands, she holds the bottle with saline solutions over a cloth.
William leans against the wall, looking around at his surroundings. There are a few people walking past him, all on their own mission. He turns his gaze to the school building across the street from him. The school building looks abandoned, except for a few children running through the halls. The pale grass in front of the school building makes him feel depressed. He checks his watch and lets out a frustrated sigh. Blake wanted to see him before he went to the color run. And now he is going to be late. He will just explain the situation to Lianna. She will understand. She always does. “Oi, why are you standing out in the open?” Blake’s gravel voice startles William. He jerks his head to Blake and finds him standing around the corner of the wall. “Good afternoon, Blake,” William greets while making his way over to him. Blake lets out a grunt as he leads them around the old wall. They come to a stop and Blake rests against the old wall. William steps next to Blake and crosses his
Light rain tickles Lianna’s face as she makes her way out of the school, William running in front of her. They had finished the color run, but it started to rain while they were cleaning up. They managed to finish packing up and are now hurrying to the car that William arranged for them. “Come on,” William calls over his shoulder, slowing his pace so that Lianna can catch up. She falls into step next to him and he lifts his jacket over them to shelter them from the rain. William leads her to the abandoned building across from the school where they can wait for the car. He ushers Lianna to the nearest wall which serves as protection from the weather. Lianna falls back against the wall and rests her hands on her knees. She tries to catch her breath. William also rests against the wall, running his hand through wet hair. “Ugh, I am soaked,” she says, twisting her shirt between her hands to get the water from it. William turns his gaze to her and notices that her white shirt is clingin
The boardroom is filled with the sound of frustrated remarks and fists slamming against the large wooden table. William’s eyes roam around the room as his arms rest on the table. He returns his focus to the binder in front of him. “Are you saying we don’t know what we are doing?” One of the directors stands up from his chair, his hand scrunching the paper. “That’s exactly what we’re saying. If you did your job properly- “ “Enough!” William’s voice booms through the room. Everyone immediately falls quiet and turns their heads to William. “Please sit down,” he instructs the director, without lifting his eyes from the binder. The director falls back into his chair and clears his throat. “Sir, you have to understand . . . “ The director trails off when he notices William’s eyes on him. He lowers his head and pretends to read something on the paper. There is a moment of silence as they all wait for William to speak. William closes the binder with a silent thud before he turns his attent
“Who?” She asks again, letting go of her father’s arms. “William Rhodes, the owner of one of the most successful hotel groups in the whole world. Partner at Intra Vires, one of the most well-known law firms in the world. I have mentioned him a few times.” Lianna shakes her head and laughs softly at her dad’s frustration. “Of course, you wouldn’t know. You never listen.” Her dad sighs. “I do listen, Dad. But I don’t recall you ever mentioning him before. He sounds important,” she jokes and bends down to pick up her dad’s cane. “So, does this William fellow know about your plans?” She throws the cane to her dad and he catches it in the air. She walks to the house but turns around to face her father. She continues backward, her gaze still on her dad. He uses the crane to support him as he follows her. “Yes, I met his father at a conference in New York last week. We talked about many things, including the marriage situation. We both agreed that it would not hurt if you guys could get t
Lianna hands Maeve a mug filled with coffee and sits down across from Maeve on the chair. Maeve takes a sip before she continues. “I still can’t believe it. You’re getting married? I never thought I’d see the day.” Maeve places the mug next to her. “And you’re getting married to none other than William Rhodes. I’m so jealous,” Maeve says with a giggle. Lianna rubs her eyebrow and lets out a tired sigh. “How do you even know who he is?” Lianna crosses her legs on the chair and leans back. “His name appears a lot in the news and he is constantly in the tabloids. He is so dreamy. And you’re getting married to him,” Maeve says, placing a soft punch against Lianna’s arm. Lianna rolls her eyes while shaking her head. “Sheesh, so he is like a celebrity?" Maeve nods her head with excitement. Lianna laughs at her reaction. "One of these days you'll be reading about me." "Don't even joke about that." Maeve takes another sip from her mug. Lianna stretches out her legs. "At least I will get
William checks his watch while he sits in the corner of the restaurant. The waiter stops at the table and checks if he wants to order. He declines and explains that he is still waiting. Giggles erupt from a few tables away from him. Two girls are staring at him and wave when he looks at them. He gives them a quick smile and waves back. They giggle again before standing up from their chairs. William rests his hands on the table, keeping his eyes on them. They quickly make their way over to him. “Can we get a picture with you?” they ask innocently, and he smirks. “Of course. Here,” he says, standing up. They put their arms around his waist and the girl lifts her phone to take a picture. He places his arms around their shoulders and gives his signature skewed smile. She snaps the picture and checks to see whether they look good. She nods her head and takes her friend's arm. They thank him as he sits back down and they head back to their table. He watches them sit down and smiles to h
Lianna rests against her apartment door as she tries to catch her breath. She slides down against the door, her chest burning from all the running. Her head rests against the door. She can hear the footsteps climbing up the stairs to her apartment. “I win. You owe me five bucks,” she breathes out when William stops at the top of the staircase. He looks at her and slightly rolls his eyes. “I never agreed to that. You just took off when I got out of the car and yelled something. I am not giving you any money,” he says while walking closer to the door. Lianna stands up and crosses her arms. He moves her away from the door and unlocks it. “Nah, you’re not going in until you give me my money.” She puts her body between him and the door. He steps back and stares into her eyes. Her eyes are narrow as she holds her arms out to block the entrance. He steps closer and uses one hand to move her away, but she does not budge. He puts his suitcase down with a sigh before taking out his wallet.
