Once they enter the apartment, William heads to the bedroom, but Lianna grabs his arm. He sighs mentally. He does not have the strength for a pep talk. He cannot deal with this now.
Lianna takes William’s arm and leads him to the island in the kitchen. She pulls out a chair and gestures for him to sit. William hesitates.
“Please?” she asks with a soft voice. William scoffs and turns to the bedroom. He cannot stand the pity on Lianna’s face.
“Sit,” she demands and William pauses. He slowly turns around and sees Lianna searching for something under the sink. With a frustrated sigh, he sits down.
Lianna grabs the first aid kit from under the sink. She makes her way back and sits across from William. Great, now she is going to patch him up. William places his hands on the table and watches Lianna remove his wrapping. The sooner she can get this over with, the sooner he can leave. For good.
After Lianna has unwrapped his hands, she holds the bottle with saline solutions over a cloth. She takes William’s hand and gently dabs the cloth on his knuckles. William winces and tries to pull his hand away, but Lianna holds him in place.
“Sorry,” she whispers and re-adjusts herself. William sighs again and Lianna raises her brows at him.
“You don’t have to do this,” he says and supports his head with the other hand. Does she think this will win him over? Get him to talk?
“Sure.” Lianna’s voice drips with sarcasm. William looks at her with a slight frown.
The tip of her tongue sticks out as she focuses on his hand. He notices how brown her eyes are and the dark circles under her eyes. Her hair is pulled into a bun, with stray hairs standing about. She kind of looks like she was electrocuted for a second.
Lianna glances at William and notices him looking at her. She raises her brows but ignores him. She bandages the hand before taking the other hand. Lianna turns her head away for a yawn.
William swallows back a yawn and feels the exhaustion seeping into him. Maybe he should not go in for work tomorrow. He can go to his cabin.
“I didn’t flinch because I thought you were going to hit me. It was merely a reaction. It had nothing to do with you, okay?” William’s eyes dart to hers and she smiles gently. “When I was in high school, I dated this guy. A bit of a delinquent, but he had a good heart. He would always get into fights and I always managed to get myself involved. This one time, I got between him and another guy. His emotions were all over the place and he was not thinking clearly. The next moment, I was on the floor.”
Lianna takes a deep breath and bandages William’s hand.
“He punched me. Broke my nose.” She chuckles at the memory. “I never thought he would hit me, but due to his anger, he did. We parted on good terms, but the punch did some damage, you know?” William nods slightly, his eyes still on Lianna.
“I flinched because of past trauma. It had nothing to do with you. I was in the same situation and I freaked out.” She looks into his eyes. He nods and looks away.
Lianna pats his hand and gets up. She goes to switch on the kettle. As she gets a mug out, she turns to William. He nods before she asks if he wants tea. She gets another mug and leans back against the counter.
They wait in silence for the kettle to boil. William contemplates whether he should tell her what happened. A mug filled with tea is placed in front of him and Lianna takes her place again.
“My mother slapped Isaac because he proposed to Bianca on the trail where I asked Evelyn to marry me,” William says before taking a sip. Lianna purses her lips together and shakes her head in disbelief. His mother slapped Isaac? So, he cannot get away with what he wants to do. Or was it because Rose is overly fond of Evelyn? Birds of the same feathers, she guesses.
William rubs his eyes as he also lets out a yawn. He should get to bed. He looks at Lianna. Maybe she is not that bad. She does not seem too affected by what happened. Then again, she never seems affected by anything.
“I’m sorry for the way I reacted. It was unnecessary. Usually, I just go to the gym to take a few punches, but today . . . “ William pauses and looks at Lianna. “How did you know where to find me?” Lianna stands up to place her mug in the sink. She shrugs as she looks over her shoulder.
“This guy, Blake, called me. He said I should come and get you.” William pulls his hand through his hair.
“He was not supposed-
“Yeah, he told me he was not allowed to talk to me, but he was not getting through to you. Quite a guy,” Lianna says with a grin. William stands up and walks over to Lianna.
“What does that mean?” he asks, leaning on the countertop next to the sink. Lianna laughs lightly.
“I mean, interesting guy to get for a bodyguard. He seems, I don’t know, a bit crazy. Dark, definitely,” Lianna says while she opens the tap. There are still a few mugs and plates she has to wash. William places the mug next to him.
“He is insane. Blake is the best bodyguard I ever had, but he is a horrible person to negotiate with. And he is unpredictable.” William remembers the first time he met Blake. Blake was early to the meeting and had drops of blood on his shirt. William thought it was for show until the guy started talking. That was someone’s blood. It was still fresh.
“He scares me,” William admits and Lianna closes the tap. She raises a brow at William. “He has gotten me out of some tough situations, but his method is questionable. His motto is, and I quote, “Leave no loose ends. Need to show these fuckers.” And that scares me.” She laughs and nods in agreement.
William downs the last bit of tea before plunging the mug into the water, splashing some onto Lianna.
“Heish, watch it,” she scolds and William chuckles. He supports himself on the counter while looking at Lianna. She is not too bad. Maybe this marriage can actually work out. He looks around the apartment and realizes that this is the first place in his life where he feels completely comfortable. There are no rules and no expectations. Just a messy girl with a small apartment.
Lianna catches him staring at her and he winks at her. Lianna rolls her eyes and gives him a fake smile.
“I’m going to bed. I can barely keep my eyes open. Thank you for the weekend,” he says. Lianna smiles genuinely. “I mean it. And I do apologize for Evelyn. If I had known she was going to be there, I would not have taken you with me. Thank you.” William leans closer and places a soft kiss on Lianna’s forehead. “Night,” he says before heading to the bedroom.
Lianna is left dumbfounded. Did he just kiss her? That psycho. How can he go from being livid to being distraught to being a playboy? Psycho vibes.
“William?” He pauses and turns back to her. She shakes her head to get her thoughts straight. “The school is having a color run tomorrow. If you can, I would enjoy the company.” William smiles and nods.
“I will be there. Just send me the details,” he says before disappearing into the bedroom. Lianna smiles to herself. What on earth did she get herself into?
William leans against the wall, looking around at his surroundings. There are a few people walking past him, all on their own mission. He turns his gaze to the school building across the street from him. The school building looks abandoned, except for a few children running through the halls. The pale grass in front of the school building makes him feel depressed. He checks his watch and lets out a frustrated sigh. Blake wanted to see him before he went to the color run. And now he is going to be late. He will just explain the situation to Lianna. She will understand. She always does. “Oi, why are you standing out in the open?” Blake’s gravel voice startles William. He jerks his head to Blake and finds him standing around the corner of the wall. “Good afternoon, Blake,” William greets while making his way over to him. Blake lets out a grunt as he leads them around the old wall. They come to a stop and Blake rests against the old wall. William steps next to Blake and crosses his
Light rain tickles Lianna’s face as she makes her way out of the school, William running in front of her. They had finished the color run, but it started to rain while they were cleaning up. They managed to finish packing up and are now hurrying to the car that William arranged for them. “Come on,” William calls over his shoulder, slowing his pace so that Lianna can catch up. She falls into step next to him and he lifts his jacket over them to shelter them from the rain. William leads her to the abandoned building across from the school where they can wait for the car. He ushers Lianna to the nearest wall which serves as protection from the weather. Lianna falls back against the wall and rests her hands on her knees. She tries to catch her breath. William also rests against the wall, running his hand through wet hair. “Ugh, I am soaked,” she says, twisting her shirt between her hands to get the water from it. William turns his gaze to her and notices that her white shirt is clingin
The boardroom is filled with the sound of frustrated remarks and fists slamming against the large wooden table. William’s eyes roam around the room as his arms rest on the table. He returns his focus to the binder in front of him. “Are you saying we don’t know what we are doing?” One of the directors stands up from his chair, his hand scrunching the paper. “That’s exactly what we’re saying. If you did your job properly- “ “Enough!” William’s voice booms through the room. Everyone immediately falls quiet and turns their heads to William. “Please sit down,” he instructs the director, without lifting his eyes from the binder. The director falls back into his chair and clears his throat. “Sir, you have to understand . . . “ The director trails off when he notices William’s eyes on him. He lowers his head and pretends to read something on the paper. There is a moment of silence as they all wait for William to speak. William closes the binder with a silent thud before he turns his attent
“Who?” She asks again, letting go of her father’s arms. “William Rhodes, the owner of one of the most successful hotel groups in the whole world. Partner at Intra Vires, one of the most well-known law firms in the world. I have mentioned him a few times.” Lianna shakes her head and laughs softly at her dad’s frustration. “Of course, you wouldn’t know. You never listen.” Her dad sighs. “I do listen, Dad. But I don’t recall you ever mentioning him before. He sounds important,” she jokes and bends down to pick up her dad’s cane. “So, does this William fellow know about your plans?” She throws the cane to her dad and he catches it in the air. She walks to the house but turns around to face her father. She continues backward, her gaze still on her dad. He uses the crane to support him as he follows her. “Yes, I met his father at a conference in New York last week. We talked about many things, including the marriage situation. We both agreed that it would not hurt if you guys could get t
Lianna hands Maeve a mug filled with coffee and sits down across from Maeve on the chair. Maeve takes a sip before she continues. “I still can’t believe it. You’re getting married? I never thought I’d see the day.” Maeve places the mug next to her. “And you’re getting married to none other than William Rhodes. I’m so jealous,” Maeve says with a giggle. Lianna rubs her eyebrow and lets out a tired sigh. “How do you even know who he is?” Lianna crosses her legs on the chair and leans back. “His name appears a lot in the news and he is constantly in the tabloids. He is so dreamy. And you’re getting married to him,” Maeve says, placing a soft punch against Lianna’s arm. Lianna rolls her eyes while shaking her head. “Sheesh, so he is like a celebrity?" Maeve nods her head with excitement. Lianna laughs at her reaction. "One of these days you'll be reading about me." "Don't even joke about that." Maeve takes another sip from her mug. Lianna stretches out her legs. "At least I will get
William checks his watch while he sits in the corner of the restaurant. The waiter stops at the table and checks if he wants to order. He declines and explains that he is still waiting. Giggles erupt from a few tables away from him. Two girls are staring at him and wave when he looks at them. He gives them a quick smile and waves back. They giggle again before standing up from their chairs. William rests his hands on the table, keeping his eyes on them. They quickly make their way over to him. “Can we get a picture with you?” they ask innocently, and he smirks. “Of course. Here,” he says, standing up. They put their arms around his waist and the girl lifts her phone to take a picture. He places his arms around their shoulders and gives his signature skewed smile. She snaps the picture and checks to see whether they look good. She nods her head and takes her friend's arm. They thank him as he sits back down and they head back to their table. He watches them sit down and smiles to h
Lianna rests against her apartment door as she tries to catch her breath. She slides down against the door, her chest burning from all the running. Her head rests against the door. She can hear the footsteps climbing up the stairs to her apartment. “I win. You owe me five bucks,” she breathes out when William stops at the top of the staircase. He looks at her and slightly rolls his eyes. “I never agreed to that. You just took off when I got out of the car and yelled something. I am not giving you any money,” he says while walking closer to the door. Lianna stands up and crosses her arms. He moves her away from the door and unlocks it. “Nah, you’re not going in until you give me my money.” She puts her body between him and the door. He steps back and stares into her eyes. Her eyes are narrow as she holds her arms out to block the entrance. He steps closer and uses one hand to move her away, but she does not budge. He puts his suitcase down with a sigh before taking out his wallet.
William pulls up to an enormous white house as “My House” by Flo Rida plays. The green grass in the front accentuates the whiteness of the house. It looks like a house from one of those rich movies. Lianna’s jaw drops as she stares at all the fancy cars parked near the house. She wanted to ask William who will be there, but she forgot about it. “Woah, this is insane,” she mutters. William looks over at her and smiles at her reaction. He searches for a parking spot and finds one next to the Rolls Royce. As the car stops, he realizes he needs to prepare Lianna for his family. “Lianna, eyes on me,” he says while he tugs her sleeve. She bops her head to the beat of the song. He turns the song down and she groans, letting her head fall against the headrest. “I’m not a child,” she tilts her head to him. “But I’m listening.” She leans closer to him. “My parents are going to be here. You know them. Then, I have a younger brother, Isaac.” “You have a younger brother?” William nods. “Were
