Lianna shoots up, blinking her eyes at the darkness. She pulls her fingers through her hair as she tries to remember where she is. A sob travels from the other side of the bed, followed by a violent shake of the bed. Her eyes try to adjust to the darkness, and she blinks a few times. William. She shifts closer to him on the bed.
“No, please. No,” he whispers with a broken voice. Lianna freezes.
“William?” she asks, crawling closer to him on her knees. She reaches her hand out to touch his face. He is soaked in sweat, and he is flaring up. It feels like he has a fever. William yanks his head away from her hand as he sobs again. He shivers from the cold air touching his chest. He is having a nightmare.
Lianna gets out of bed and searches for her phone on the nightstand. William mumbles something incoherently and throws his head from one side to the other on the pillow.
Lianna switches her phone’s flashlight on and inspects William. He has thrown the covers off him in an attempt to free himself. His body is covered in goosebumps with a few drops of sweat rolling down his face. Is he . . .
She crouches down next to him and removes his hair from his forehead. A tear rolls down his cheek and falls onto the pillow. He is crying. Lianna puts her hand against his cheek, causing him to let out another sob.
“No, Evelyn-” his voice trembles. It seems like he is having a nightmare that includes Evelyn. Lianna gets up with a soft sigh. She checks the time on her phone and sees that it is 01:51.
Lianna tiptoes to the bathroom to retrieve a washcloth. She runs it under warm water and wrings the cloth before she tiptoes back to William.
It takes a while to untangle him from the covers. She should get the sweat off him. She does not want him to catch a cold. William shivers when the cloth touches his face. He lets out something that sounds like a sob, but he is too exhausted to let out a proper sob.
Lianna rubs his neck, moving down his chest and back. She tries to do it as smoothly and swiftly as possible. Her eyelids are heavy and she has to focus on them to not fall asleep.
Back in the bathroom she rinses the washcloth and hangs it over the towel bar. She gathers the covers and throws them over him before tucking him in.
Lianna walks back to her side of the bed and grabs her pillow. She searches through the drawers of the nightstand and finds a blanket in the bottom drawer. She throws everything on the sofa.
She takes the earphones from the nightstand and attempts to put them into his ears, but he jerks his head away. After a few failed attempts, she manages to place the earphones in. She opens a playlist that should help him to sleep calmly. She presses on shuffle and the music plays starts to play softly.
William lets out a tired sigh before he sobs softly. She settles in on the sofa as she does not want to bother William. A yawn escapes her, and she adjusts her position. The music plays in the background.
Why is William having a nightmare about Evelyn? What did she do? Lianna lifts her head to look at William. Her eyes have adjusted to the dark so she can make out the outer lines of William. He is moving around less, and his breathing has returned to normal.
The image of Evelyn in her red dress pops up in her head. She is a beautiful woman. Lianna can understand why William would marry someone like her. But the question remains. What did she do that would cause them to get divorced?
Maybe she cheated on William. Lianna will not put it past Evelyn to do something as horrible as that. Lianna will ask Bianca when she sees her again. Right now, she just wants to get some sleep. She relaxes on the sofa and pulls the blanket over her. She closes her eyes and listens to the sounds of the night.
Lianna wakes up from a pain shooting through her side. She wakes up and realizes she is on the floor. Did she fall off the sofa? She smiles as she sits upright, listening to William. He seems to be calmer.
With a yawn, Lianna stands up and heads to William. She feels around for the phone, but her hands touch William’s arms. He sobs softly and curls up into a small ball.
“Sorry,” she whispers and continues her search for her phone. She finds the phone next to William, under the covers. The time flashes on the lock screen. It is currently 04:22. She navigates to her flashlight and switches it on again.
One earphone has fallen out. William is caught up in the covers. He is sweating less than earlier and he has stopped crying. She tucks William in and places the earphone back into his ear. She heads back to the sofa and falls face-first onto the sofa. She is not going to survive the day with this little sleep.
“Is anybody out there” “Can you lead me to the light” “Is anybody out there” “Tell me it’ll all be alright” William slowly opens his eyes. Is that music? He cannot believe someone would play music this early. He stares up at the roof while he processes the nightmare. He was doing good with the nightmares until last night. The early morning sun shines through the window onto the bed. He stretches his arms above his head and yawns. “I’ve been here the whole time” “Singing you a song” “I will carry you” He shoots up, and his eyes dart around the room. A beautiful voice echoes in his ears. He turns his head to the sofa where he sees a movement. His hands lift to his ears, feeling the earphones. He realizes that the music comes from the earphones. Why does he have Lianna’s earphones? He glances at Lianna’s side of the bed. She must have moved to the sofa after he fell asleep on the bed. He throws his legs off the bed and unlocks his phone. It is already 07:46. He should get dres
William walks in front of the rest of the group of men towards the front door. He enters the house and walks down the hall toward the living room. He hears voices from the living room. He slowly makes his way into the room, and his mother notices him. She gestures for him to come closer. His eyes search for Lianna as he strolls to his mother. Lianna is not here. Perhaps she is in their room. He gives his mother a peck on her cheek before he sits on the armrest next to her. “How was your day?” he asks his mother, his eyes darting around the room. Evelyn is also missing in action. “It was wonderful. Exactly what we all needed.” William nods and watches as the other men enter the living room, greeting everyone. “Where is Lianna?” he asks as he leans closer to his mother. She shrugs and turns her head to his father. He should have known. He stands up, but his mother gets a hold of his arm. “Where are you going? Tell me about your day.” His mother pulls him back to the armrest and
An alarm wakes Lianna from her light sleep. She groans and turns around, falling off again. At least this is the last time she has to sleep on this cursed sofa. Her couch at home is much more comfortable. “Did you fall off?” William asks with his morning voice. Lianna laughs lightly and nods her head. Her head falls back on the ground as she stares at the ceiling. William gets out of bed and walks over to her. He holds his hand out to her and helps her to her feet. “How did you sleep?” Lianna adjusts her t-shirt. William had another nightmare last night which caused her to wake up. Whatever the nightmare is about, it must be something terrible. He was sobbing and trashing around when she woke up. She tried to put the earphones in, but he started crying when she touched him. “Fine, you?” he asks while walking back to the bed. He cannot believe that he had another nightmare. And why does Lianna keep on sleeping on the couch? He knows that the sofa is not comfortable at all. Does she k
As William walks to his mother and brother, all the feelings and memories he has suppressed for the last few years rise to the surface. He has to blink the tears of hatred and pain away. He did not think that he would have to deal with this again. He made a deal with his parents. They would focus all their attention on him, and in return, Isaac gets to live the life he wants without his parents trying to ruin it or change it. They get to take everything out on him, but not a hair on Isaac’s head will be touched. Isaac must have done something to anger their mother, but she has no right to violate their deal. She knows there will be grave consciences. His father is not going to let this go when he finds out. William sees his mother lifting her hand again and Isaac braces himself. William hurries and steps in between his mother and Isaac, catching her hand. His mother's face becomes pale when she sees William. "William, what are you doing here? I thought-" "Have you been hitting hi
Lianna watches William from her peripheral as they walk back to her apartment. He has not said a word during the trip back. She did not even attempt to make small talk, much less ask him what happened. He had this dark, disturbed look in his eyes that scares her. William opens the door and barges into the apartment with his bags, heading to the bedroom. Lianna trails behind him with her bag. She places her bag on the island in the kitchen and goes to switch on the kettle. “Do you want tea?” she asks into the silence, but there is no answer. Lianna frowns as she slowly walks to her bedroom. What is he doing? She enters the bedroom and sees William sitting on the edge of the bed, his head in his hands. His breathing is uneven and he is gripping his hair. “William?” He looks at her and she notices that his eyes are even darker. “What is going on?” she asks, giving a step closer. William shakes his head and stands up. He walks past her, slightly bumping into her shoulder. She bites th
Lianna gets out of the cab, pulling her jacket closer to her body. It is freezing tonight. The cab driver asks for the money and she opens up her small bag. She hopes she has some money with her. “Oi, don’t worry about that. I will sort it out,” a man says from the entrance of the building. Lianna watches as a broad-shouldered man comes trudging toward her. He stops next to her and holds a few dollars out to the driver. The driver takes the money and bids them good night. “This way,” the man instructs and Lianna follows the man to the building. They get inside the building and Lianna realizes that it is a gym. Why did this guy ask her here? She scans the place and sees William punching one of the bags. The white bag is covered in red marks. Is it blood? “I apologize for the abrupt invitation. You see, I am not supposed to talk to you.” Lianna turns her head slightly to look at the man. He has a glowering look on his face. He folds his hands in front of him and leans back. “I am B
Once they enter the apartment, William heads to the bedroom, but Lianna grabs his arm. He sighs mentally. He does not have the strength for a pep talk. He cannot deal with this now. Lianna takes William’s arm and leads him to the island in the kitchen. She pulls out a chair and gestures for him to sit. William hesitates. “Please?” she asks with a soft voice. William scoffs and turns to the bedroom. He cannot stand the pity on Lianna’s face. “Sit,” she demands and William pauses. He slowly turns around and sees Lianna searching for something under the sink. With a frustrated sigh, he sits down. Lianna grabs the first aid kit from under the sink. She makes her way back and sits across from William. Great, now she is going to patch him up. William places his hands on the table and watches Lianna remove his wrapping. The sooner she can get this over with, the sooner he can leave. For good. After Lianna has unwrapped his hands, she holds the bottle with saline solutions over a cloth.
William leans against the wall, looking around at his surroundings. There are a few people walking past him, all on their own mission. He turns his gaze to the school building across the street from him. The school building looks abandoned, except for a few children running through the halls. The pale grass in front of the school building makes him feel depressed. He checks his watch and lets out a frustrated sigh. Blake wanted to see him before he went to the color run. And now he is going to be late. He will just explain the situation to Lianna. She will understand. She always does. “Oi, why are you standing out in the open?” Blake’s gravel voice startles William. He jerks his head to Blake and finds him standing around the corner of the wall. “Good afternoon, Blake,” William greets while making his way over to him. Blake lets out a grunt as he leads them around the old wall. They come to a stop and Blake rests against the old wall. William steps next to Blake and crosses his
