Chapter 0006

** Sydney **

“I can’t believe that I slept with him!” I exclaimed with a loud voice.

Lydia groaned and shook her head. “It is not a big deal, Syd. It’s not like Aiden is going to know if you slept with someone else or not, he probably won’t even care if you did. Just let it go,” she said.

“Not a big deal? Lydia, I can’t believe that this is coming from you!” I exhaled in frustration.

I stood up and paced around the bedroom with my hands on my waist. I am feeling guilty about it and my mind is not at rest. How can I sleep with a random guy who I just met in less than twenty four hours? I am still married for goodness sake!

What if Aiden finds out about Joyceline and her lies, then decides to get back together with me? This would blow up the chances that I have to reunite with my husband.

“Look, Sydney. Aiden cheated on you with Joyceline, your best friend. You go to the club and sleep with someone, take it as a good scope for revenge.”

“There is nothing like revenge on this one. I never wanted to do it in the first place but he was so cute and sounded sweet. His smile made me feel wet and when he touched me, I felt the sparks as the light throughout my whole body. When he asked me to sleep with him, I didn’t even think twice and I said yes,”I said as I remembered the events that unfolded last night.

“Go on. Tell me more about it,” Lydia said.

“I have not felt good enough in bed for a while. It can’t even be compared to my lovemaking with Aiden - if it’s even lovemaking at all. But this guy? He explored my body in one night and took me to places where my imagination has never been before. Last night was awesome, Lydia!”

I slapped my lips when the last words tumbled out. Lydia burst out in laughter, holding her stomach tight as she rolled on the bed.

“Girl, you are literally fawning over him. All you did just now is to admire and compliment his good ride on you. You even compared him to Aiden so why are you feeling guilty about it?” Lydia asked.

I sit down beside her and bite my mouth. I haven’t told Lydia that I am pregnant with Aiden’s baby. I feel bad because I know that I should have stopped him and the worst of it all is that we had unprotected sex. I even suspect that he must have released his seed inside of me because he was slightly drunk last night.

I made love to him with my wedding ring on my finger. And Lydia expects me not to feel guilty about this, it can’t be!

I sighed, readying myself to tell her the truth because she deserved to know about it. Keeping it from her would only result in more complications in the future.

“Lydia. To be honest, the reason why I’m feeling guilty is because I am pregnant,” I said with my head bowed in sadness.

“What! Pregnant!” Lydia exploded in surprise.

I went to my box and brought out the pregnancy results for her to see. Her eyes widened as she stared at it in disbelief.

“Sydney, you are two months pregnant and you didn’t tell me anything about it yesterday.”

“I’m sorry for not telling you about it earlier. Not that I was intending to hide it from you, I just wanted to clear my head from all of this drama first before facing reality,” I replied.

“Is Aiden and his family aware that you are pregnant with his baby?” Lydia asked.

“No. When I found out about my pregnancy, I was going to announce it at my anniversary and in front of everyone. Unfortunately, I found out about Aiden and Joyceline first so I had to hold myself back. When I saw that Aiden was eager to divorce me as he had believed that Joyceline was pregnant for him, I had no choice but to keep it a secret from them. I hope you understand why I had to do it. For the safety of my child and its upbringing too, I don’t know how my marriage is going to end but I know that I don’t want my child to feel the pains of growing up without a father,” I explained bitterly.

The memories of that night flashed in my mind as my heart grew heavy with bitterness. Aiden turned his back on me when I needed him the most . All I ever did was love and cherish the moments that we have shared but it wasn’t enough for him, he wanted more and sadly, I can’t give him more than what he wanted.

Lydia suddenly hugged me tightly enough that I could barely breathe properly. Tears spilled from our eyes as we hugged each other.

“You don’t have to worry about it anymore. Your secret is safe with me. Besides, you should be happy that your baby will have a good nurse and godmother to look after her,” Lydia said.

I brightened up on hearing this. “Really? Lydia, that would be a great idea!”

“I know right. So I want you to get rid of the guilt that you have been feeling. Whoever you slept with would probably not even remember your name or your face. You have to clear your mind and focus on building a healthy lifestyle for your baby,” Lydia advised me.

“Thank you but there is one more important thing that I have to do.”

“What is that?”

“I need a job,” I replied.

“A job? But you are two months pregnant and will be feeling exhausted all the time,” Lydia said with concern written boldly on her face.

“I know but I have to get my own apartment and help you to minimise your bills. I don’t want to be a burden to you.”

Lydia took my hands and said, “I don’t mind if you stay here for a year. You are welcome to stay as long as you want.”

“You will never decline my request to stay but I know that the consequences might wear you out and I won’t let that happen to you, that’s why getting a job is important for me. It’s going to be three months of entrepreneurship and once my baby bump is visible, I will stop.”

“It sounds so easy to say but very difficult to accomplish. You don’t know who your boss might turn out to be - harsh or good - their real character remains unknown. I don’t want you to regret making this decision in the near future,” Lydia said sadly.

“That is why you are here to help me out with choosing the right place to apply to. As long as you are here to support me, I’m pretty sure that I won’t make a single mistake,” I assured her.

She beamed with a smile on her face. “I know just the right site for job hunting,” she said with a bright face.

I clap my hands excitedly. “You see? You have a way of doing things and it’s great!” I shrieked.

Lydia brought out her laptop and logged into the site. I could see several companies that have vacancies for various departments in their company. But Lydia had to search for work opportunities within the city and I was relieved to see that there were a few companies that were in need of workers.

“Look at this one. SG limited is in need of a personal assistant for their CEO, this position will be easier for you as a pregnant woman to do for the next three months and their pay is quite a fat sum of money,” Lydia said.

I nod my head as I see it too. “But it’s not going to work for me,” I said.

Lydia turned to stare at me. “Why do you say so?”

“Because my work schedule is for three months but it’s obvious they need someone to work for more than six months consistently. Even if I apply, they will overlook my application,” I explained.

Lydia sighed, “You don’t have to look down on yourself. Before you make any conclusions, you must be sure that you have been rejected completely. Who knows? You might be lucky this time around.”

I know that Lydia is only saying all this so I can feel better but honestly, a little hope in me arises as I listen to her words.

“Fine then. Let’s do this,” I finally accepted.

Even if I might not get the job, I have to make an effort if I truly want to work and earn hard money for myself. Not that I was completely broke, Aiden made sure my bank account was never empty but I had this feeling that making my own money would be a lot better for me. I looked at the laptop eagerly as Lydia arranged my portfolio and sent an email to the company.

“Now, what next?” I asked.

“We wait for their response,” she replied.
