Chapter 4

Somewhere in Jenaire City, Frederick lounged on a couch in a hilltop mansion. He was in the middle of a phone call.

"I haven't got any orders for you. If anything crops up, I'll be sure to contact you."

He let out a long sigh of relief after he ended the call. He'd answered too many calls today.

Three years ago, when Frederick returned to Jenaire City, he had saved many people. All these people wanted to repay his kindness, but Frederick had no need for their help at that point.

So, he came up with the Cloudbreaker and told them that if he ever needed help from them, he would release the Cloudbreaker.

He had then given the Cloudbreaker to Priscilla, knowing that with these people's powers, they would be able to help her fulfill any wish that she had.

Since Priscilla had released the Cloudbreaker today, all these people thought that Frederick needed something from them. Hence, they all called him in hopes of being able to repay him for saving them back then.

"Mr. York, is this mansion to your liking?" a man with a squarish face asked respectfully beside Frederick.

Frederick nodded lightly. "I'm very happy with this mansion. I just received a call from my mother-in-law. She asked to meet me, so please excuse us."

The man nodded. "I'll be leaving now then, Mr. York. If you need anything, just let me know." And with that, the man left the mansion.

Had anyone else caught sight of the scene, they would have been astonished by how Jeffrey Lansdell, a huge property tycoon in Jenaire City, was behaving so deferentially with a young man.

Frederick stretched lazily on the couch as he watched Jeffrey leave.

When Jeffrey saw the Cloudbreaker that day, he had hurriedly called Frederick. Upon hearing that Frederick had just gotten a divorce and was left with nothing but the clothes on his back and no place to stay, he immediately gave him this mansion without a second thought.

Frederick gave Marianne the location of the mansion when she called him earlier on. He had no idea why Marianne was looking for him. He wondered if she was here to blame him for the divorce.

A series of kicks and bangs on the door pulled him back to the present. Frederick quickly got up to get the door. It was Marianne and Mitchell, who were both clearly fuming.

Frederick greeted them politely. They used to be his in-laws, after all.

"Mom, you're here."

Marianne's face fell. "You son of a bitch! Your old hag of a mother is long gone. Don't you ever call me that. It's disgusting."

Frederick used to come from a wealthy and prominent family. But 20 years ago, both his parents were murdered, and Frederick, who was just a child, ended up abroad, in Motheca. It wasn't until three years ago that he finally returned to his home country.

It was also for his background that Marianne agreed to let her daughter, Priscilla, marry him.

She had thought that since Frederick's family used to be wealthy, perhaps his parents had left behind a huge fortune for him.

Frederick had assumed that Marianne was here to get him to think things through with the divorce.

Never had he expected her to start insulting his deceased mother the moment she saw him. His rage flared up instantly.

"I will let you off just this once for Priscilla's sake. If I ever hear you insulting my parents ever again, don't blame me for not showing you any more respect."

Marianne simply chuckled dryly. The impression that Frederick left her with all these years was that he was just a spineless good-for-nothing. His threats did not scare her in the least.

"You're letting me off just this once? Oh, I'm terrified." She mocked him.

"Give me back the ten million dollars right this instant, or I'll be the one who's not going to let you off! You shameless bastard!

"How dare you scam my daughter of ten million dollars just so she can get a divorce? It seems like I've underestimated just how shameless you can be!"

Frederick's eyes narrowed as he said coldly, "I never took the ten million dollars from Priscilla. I think you're mistaken. I, Frederick York, am a strong, independent man. I will never take money from a woman just because she wants a divorce!"

Marianne scoffed. It was just as Wade had said. The asshole would never admit to taking the money. It was a good thing she came prepared!

"Mitch, this son of a bitch isn't paying up. Teach him a good lesson."

Mitch was already dying to get on with it. Upon receiving Marianne's orders, he pulled out the dagger that Wade gave him, and shouted, "I'll kill you for not paying up!"

Then, he brutally stabbed the dagger at Frederick's chest.
