Chapter 4

“Oh my god I’ve got the job I can’t believe it” I say to myself quietly “I’ve got the job” I cheer a little too loudly as everyone stops what they are doing to look at me or in my direction and I blush a deep crimson staining my cheeks.

“Sorry” I say softly then everyone goes back to what they were doing just like nothing happened, as I hear my name get called to collect my order. So, I head to the counter to grab the coffees and put in the sugars for both me and dad with our bagels in hand too and head back to the cars at the hotel so I can tell dad the good news and we can get back on the road.

We make good time on the road and arrive in Albuquerque, New Mexico just after noon. To celebrate my getting the job dad is treating me to lunch at a nice restaurant called Campo. We dined outside on their patio looking onto the kitchen gardens.

While we are waiting for the waiter, we looked at the menu to decide on what we would like to order. We made up our minds just as the waiter arrived. I ordered the smoked beef sandwich with a lavender latte and dad also ordered the smoked beef sandwich but with an iced tea to drink.

The waiter took the menus after writing down our orders and took his leave. Not long after the waiter left, he appeared back with our drinks and put them on the table for us.

Dad lifts his drink to make a toast “Savannah congratulations on getting your new job I couldn’t be prouder of you baby girl.” I lift my drink and raise it in the air.

“Thanks dad I’m just happy I found something with the experience I have from working at the diner on the weekends.” We clink our cup and glass together and take a sip.

“So, dad, are you looking forward to starting in the new office next week?” I ask once I put down my cup. He nods taking another sip of his iced tea.

“I am baby girl we have worked so hard to get to where we are and before I forget we are having dinner with Mr. Lockwood and his family tomorrow night” I almost choke on my drink as he surprises me with this news.

“I’m sorry dad but what did you just say? We are having dinner with your new boss and his family! When was you going to tell me?” I look at dad as I grab the napkin that’s on the table to dab round my mouth.

As dad is about to talk the waiter arrives with our sandwiches, we thank him as soon as he places the food on the table in front of us and takes his leave.

“I planned on telling you tonight when we arrive at the new house” he tells me after he takes a bite out of his sandwich.

This is unbelievable I cannot believe my dad sometimes. I take a bite out of mine tasting the succulent juices of the smoked beef and how the chewy texture blends so nicely together. “Dad you should have told me soon as you knew, you know I like to prepare when I’m meeting people from your office, especially when it’s the owner of the company that you work for.”

“Savannah please calm down I know you; you’ll be great it’s just a welcome dinner with Mr. Lockwood, his wife and their kids.” I roll my eyes thinking to myself great I am stuck with a bunch of kids for the evening I’ll be playing babysitter.

“They are your age and they attend your new school, so you’ll know someone after you start tomorrow.” Thank god the ‘kids’ as dad says are my age that’s one good reassurance.

“Well thanks for telling me now dad I have a little time to prepare” I say sarcastically as dad gives me his stern look. We finish our lunch in silence enjoying the beautiful surroundings in the garden. We pay and give the waiter a generous tip, head back to the cars and back on to the open road.
