Chapter 8

We walked out of class together “What class do you have next?” Jen asked once we got out of the classroom.

“Um...” I look at my class schedule “I’ve got Earth Science next.”

“Perfect I’ve got that too is it with Miss. Dawson?” she asks, and I look back at my schedule and nod looking at the name of the teacher. “Even better we can go together,” Jen says as she links her arm through mine and leads us to our lockers before heading to class.

We talk all the way to our lockers to grab our books and talk all the way to class. If we didn’t know any better, you could say we’ve been friends our entire lives. We got to class and sat together to only hear the voices from the hall before first period and now I know the names to go with the voices coming from behind us.

“I can’t believe your sister is befriending the new girl” I heard what Candace was saying so me and Jen looked at each other and Jen rolls her eyes.

“Candace just leave them alone it’s up to Jen who she hangs out with you know she has her own mind” I heard Chase tell I believe his girlfriend both Jen and I looked surprised to hear him say that.

We sat through the lesson taking notes and comparing notes while trying to not pay attention to the snickering and the mumbling from the happy couple sitting behind us. Earth Science felt like the quickest lesson so far today, before I knew it the bell was ringing signaling the end of the lesson. After Earth Science me and Jen went our separate ways for our next period, but we arranged to meet up for lunch. I headed off for Home Economics on the other end of this side of the building.

Once in Home Ec, I noticed everyone in class are standing round the pre heated stoves with aprons on. Seems like I will be cooking in this class today this will be fun. I find myself an apron and get myself set up at a station just in time for the teacher to start class. “Right, everyone I see we’re all set today we are baking bunt cake so let’s get started.”

Bunt cake! Brilliant I can bake this with my eyes closed thanks to mom showing me how to bake it when I was a little girl because it’s my dad’s favorite dessert. “Can you bake this cake?” a Latin American voice asks beside me. I look at the person standing next to me to see a natural beauty, long black hair and dark chocolate eyes, and a skin tone I could be jealous of.

“Oh, um... yeah, I can.” “Oh, thank you” she hugs me “You are my life saver I can cook no problem, but baking I cause a fire,” We both laugh I offer her my hand.

“I’m Savannah and I’m happy to help” She takes my hand and shakes it.

“I’m Selena it’s nice to meet you.”

“Selena by any chance are you named after that singer from Texas?” she looks at me stunned. “Yeah, how do you know about her not many non-Hispanic knows of her music.”

“I’ve heard a few of her songs I love music and I can play; I’m learning how to play every genre of music.”

As Selena looks at me, I swear her eyes have gotten bigger “Wow that’s increíble I’ve gotta hear you play sometime.”

I nod “Yeah that’ll be great I’d love to.” As the lesson went on Selena and I baked a lovely bunt cake, and our teacher Mrs. Saunders was incredibly pleased with our cake. After we finished the clean up the bell rang for lunch.

“What are your plans for lunch?” Selena asks me as we walk out of the classroom.

“I’m meeting up with Jen you’re more than welcome to join us if you like?” Selena stops and looks at me.

“Jen as in Jennifer Lockwood?”

That surname! Why does it sound so familiar? But I can’t think why. “I don’t know if it’s the same person but come with and find out.” We follow in step with each other heading for the cafeteria ‘cause man I could eat a horse with how hungry I am. We grab our lunches and go searching for Jen.
