Sixty-Eight

Sarah drummed her fingers impatiently, frustrated by the traffic. They were stuck for over forty-five minutes. Every second counted, but each vehicle inched forward ever so slowly. Despite the air conditioner being on, Sarah felt like she was burning in an oven.

Her husband was trying to calm her down over the phone, and even her driver received a piece of her frustration and was surprised that his boss would raise her voice. Sarah was usually mild-mannered, but not now. She was restless and impatient.

"Are you seriously transferring your aggression onto the poor driver?" her husband asked when she asked the driver if he could find another route.

"I can't sit here all day. I have to see Sophia today."

Sophia hadn't returned any of her calls or messages. The silence was deafening, and Sarah couldn't sleep.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. There is no alternative route. You have to wait it out."

Sarah fiddled with her wedding band, and after what felt like an eternity, they arrived at Sophia's apartm
