Chapter Six - A New Perspective, Part I

AFTER TWO HOURS WE ARRIVES AT MY NEW ESTATE.

Rae ~ I choose to call her like that because it's easy ~ held me higher in her arms, so I could see the property which was more like a castle.

At first sight, I thought it was too much, because well.. a castle just for one kid?

But it's good, as I already notice by looking here and there, there are just a few people working in the estate, so I'll be able to play freely or to sneak at the library in the middle of the night without anyone spying on me.

I found a new perspective after thinking more about the fact that I'll be living in the estate for a while, which I prefer.

I'm not anxious at all to meet the Empress, the Queens, the princes, or the princesses.

I admit that I'll actually miss Eirwen because I grew kinda accustomed to him, but I'll get over it.

What caught me was that I never had a father-and-daughter relationship in my life, once my damn father treated me the way he did, and out of nowhere, I felt closer to Eirwen the way I always wanted to feel with dad-

But he isn't my father and he already has a lot of children, so it isn't good for me to feel this way.

Rae and Sir Gregory entered the castle with me, they explained something to the butler, and the only thought which passed through his mind was-

[So this is the Emperor's illegitimate daughter? She's cute, but she doesn't look like him at all. Did her mother hit him or something?]

Okay, I think I'll have to grow accustomed to thoughts like these until someone tells them that I'm adopted.

He guided us to a really fancy and big cream chamber, right in front of the Emperor's chamber.

"This will be your new chamber, Princess Evie."

That's so awkward, I don't feel like I'll be able to grow accustomed to that.

I smiled at him and he melted and pet my head.

"The princess is so cute."

"She is, isn't she?"

Rae agreed with a smile and Sir Gregory also nodded with a soft smile on his lips.

"Mrs. McRae? Can I ask you a question about the princess, with all due respect?"

[Well, at least he didn't try to ask right away.]

Sir Gregory thought, already knowing what the Butler was going to ask, as well as both of me and Rae.

[I was waiting for this.]

She thought and I laughed, they won't understand me anyway.

"Of course you can."

"Is Princess Evie, really the Emperor's illegitimate daughter?"

No, I'm not.

"She isn't. He adopted her."

Sir Gregory was the one who answered.

[She's adopted? Why would the Emperor adopt a random kid on his journey, when he already has a lot of kids who didn't even meet him, waiting anxiously for him at home? Did he send this girl here to hide this from the Empress and the Queens? I wouldn't want to be this kid when she starts growing up around the princes and princesses-]

In moments like this, I just wish I couldn't hear their thoughts at all because it's embarrassing.

This isn't something very pleasant to hear, but it's not like I don't know all of this.

"Oh..."

And it's in these moments that I realize how many discussions would be caused and how many bonds would be broken if everyone said what they really think.

As planned, I always crawled into the library every day in the middle of the night and no one discovered me.

Well, that's what I thought-

Until one night, in the second week of my second month living in the estate, when I crawled into the library as always and started reading my third book of the night, a male voice startled me.

"So I was right. He indeed took you in because you're something else."

When I turned around to face the person, I saw Sir Gregory sitting relaxed in the armchair, looking straight at my eyes.

I swallowed since I hadn't yet crawled in front of him or Rae.

I tried smiling to ease the tension, but he didn't smile back.

He just continued to stare at me with his suspicious gaze.

"After following you here during all this time, if you can read I think you may be able to understand all we are saying."

I nodded.

He's one of Eirwen's trustworthy guys, and I also don't feel comfortable lying to him.

To be honest, the same goes for Rae.

"I'm curious to know why did you hide that you were already able to craw."

Would he be surprised if I talked back, telepathically?

"And why were you crawling in the middle of the night into the library since the first day we got here."

Shit-

So he indeed followed me since that day?

But how?

["How did you follow me without me noticing, Sir Gregory?"]

For a brief moment he looked scared, but then he took a deep breath and said:

"You have telepathy?"

["Yes!"]

I said with a smile.

"Then you'd read all of our thoughts since we met?"

["Exactly. It was funny, but in some moments I just wished I didn't have this power."]

"Does Eirwen knows?"

["Of course."]

["Since when are you able to do this?"]

I laughed when he tried to talk to me like this.

["Since I was 9 months. One month after I met Eirwen."]

["Why did he adopt you?"]

["Why are you asking me something you already know?"]

He raised his eyebrows in surprise.

["Oh, don't be like that. I know what you think about me since I first saw you. It was funny to see all of you struggling over trying to guess why I am here. But you were the only one who was close to the answer, you just couldn't prove it. That's why you followed me, am I right?"]

"Frighteningly, yes."

["So, how did you do it?"]

"My power is a simple one, but rare and way too useful. I can become invisible and intangible. That's why you didn't felt my presence."

["That also explains why I couldn't hear your thoughts while you were here."]

"Mm-hmm. So you are really a special kid."

["Well, yes. More special than you could ever guess, but you can simply resume me as a special person."]

"You, also, has a very good vocabulary for a baby, well saying."

["Pfft, I know."]

"Where are you from?"

["I don't wanna lie to you, so I cannot tell you where I truly come from- but you can know that Eirwen found me in the Desert of Tywod."]

"I understand that. But what about Eirwen? Does he knows?"

["Theoretically? Yes. Literally? No."]

I smiled at him and he laughed confused.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

["Who knows?! So, can you keep this as a secret between us?"]

"Yes, of course, don't worry about that."

Well, this situation ended up much better than I thought it would.

"But I must tell you that, as your personal knight, I'll follow you every night."

["Okay, I just like to read those stories and records, because up there wasn't the exactly same. The perspective is kinda different."]

"Up there?"

["Nothing you must worry about."]

"If you say so."

He said with that soft smile and his mind was clear this time, so I went back reading.
