"Enough! Don't hurt my mother!"

I sobbed loudly as I clutched the hem of my mother Ruth's dress. Uncle Oscar is drunk again, and he began arguing with Mother.

"Hey, you kid, don't get involved if you don't want me to replace you with your useless mother!"

I looked at him, still clutching the hem of his gown. We had just returned from the bakery when we ran into the drunk uncle.
