One thing I hated about what happened to me, was the anxiety that filled me when something simple happened. For instance, the doorbell ringing. It was the third time someone had rung it. I knew that you needed a code to get up to the penthouse, so it was probably someone they knew, but the scared part of my mind filled with images of the faceless man who liked sending me messages. The apartment smelled like a bakery. I sucked in another deep breath and let out a sigh. It was a scent I missed most before my Mother got married to John. She used to work at a bakery and I would always tag along because she didn’t have enough money to pay for a babysitter.
