The strangled sound of the rogue’s shout made me snap my eyes away from Elena’s enchanting smile with a frown.

I couldn't help the way my gut dropped when I saw his back straighten and stiffen, automatically shielding Elena’s frail body behind me just as Klein Markov turned to me with a wild expression in his eyes.

I realized instantly what it was. Fear for himself…Fear for Elena. I could tell from the way his clear silvery eyes seemed to reach over my shoulder at the woman.

Markov was NEVER scared. What the fuck was going on? I scanned the shadowed lime of the trees as alarm tingled in the back of my neck, making me flex my claws reflexively.

“What? What is it?” Elena’s small voice whispered before I could voice the words, but the rogue was already shaking his head, storming toward us and shoving hard at my chest, pushing us farther back to the cabin until I locked my knees.
