Percival's Engagement

Eulalia had a broken leg, but her ears were fine. She could hear that it was Evadne calling Percival, though she couldn't catch the details of their conversation.

Eulalia didn't react, and Percival wasn't discouraged. Over the past few weeks, he'd gotten used to her cold attitude. Though it hurt, he figured it was better than her previous suicidal behavior.

After Percival left, Ms. Hayak took over pushing Eulalia's wheelchair. A nurse approached Eulalia directly.

"Ms. Clearwater, someone asked me to pass on a message to you."

Eulalia remained unresponsive, but Ms. Hayak was taken aback. She thought it best to pretend she hadn't seen or heard anything.

Eulalia patted Ms. Hayak's hand and spoke for the first time in ten days, her voice hoarse: "Ms. Hayak, step back a bit. I need to talk to her."

Ms. Hayak hesitated. "But..."

"Don't worry, nothing will happen. Just stand back and watch."

"Okay." Ms. Hayak stepped back twenty or thirty steps, stopping about 30 feet away.
