Chapter Forty Five

Axel PoV

“It’s impossible,” I murmured to myself as I walked back home, “there was no way she knew. There was no way anyone knew.”

Her words sent a cold, fearful chill down my spine, but I shook it off. As far as the world was concerned, they’d died in an ambush by bandits.

“Bandits killed them,” I repeatedly said to myself.

Bandits killed them.

To sell that lie, I had to convince myself that it was true. I’d lied so much to myself that I believed the lie to be true, but Aurora’s words had crashed the façade right in front of me. I was living a lie. But I knew the truth, and so did Maximo.

And for the past twenty-five years, the truth had haunted me.

I’d just been named beta of the pack, and I was ecstatic. Being Alpha was all ever I wanted. It was my dream, my ambition. It was the reason I woke up in the morning, and I aspired to nothing else. I wanted to be the Alpha, and I was one step away by being the Beta.

I worked my ass of, and I finally earned it.
