Chapter 27 – Would, Not Could

(Eve's POV)

“I didn’t see him, Eve,” Rudy sighed, glancing at me sadly before returning his eyes to the road.

Poor Rudy told me what happened on their way to the company. He didn’t leave any single detail and showed me the video he got from the dashcam. Even if he didn’t tell me, I could imagine his heart pounding, afraid to lose his job for being an incompetent driver. He didn’t mention that part, but the sad looks on his face said he was worried about not driving Callahan tomorrow.

“Rudy, you didn’t hit the guy. You said he fell while crossing. There must be other reasons why it happened,” I said, trying to comfort him.

The dashcam proved he was telling the truth, but he seemed to be looking for an ally. Well, he had one. Bob was on his side. Maybe even Cal. He would have probably fired Rudy for being an incompetent driver immediately if it was his fault.

“I love working as his driver,” he murmured, curving a melancholy smile as he stopped the car at the hospital’s driveway.
