“I swear to you…that I won’t harm you. I admit I’ve been told to bring you back before the Queen…but you’ve refused to return so rest assured that I’ve discarded that order.” Jack said, staring at the distance Denise had created between them with a frown. “You don’t need to be wary of me.” He sighed. “For now, get some rest and I’ll keep watch. The wolves sent out with me are pretty far behind, but if they do come close, I’ll wake you immediately.”

Denise held her bag tighter against her chest, her eyes never leaving Jack’s face. He seemed genuine, but the look on the face and that of the heart could be different. She couldn’t continue to be naive. For some reason, after sending her away, they were looking for her again. Perhaps, Jack’s strategy was getting her to trust him and then stabbing her in the back. She knew she couldn’t put that past him.
