The Crowd

My throat tightened, a sudden dryness creeping in. I hesitated, not wanting to reveal the truth that I had accidentally overheard him talking to Sofia about their plans for tonight. I didn't want him to think that I still harbored feelings for him or that I was envious of his relationship with her.

There was a heavy silence before Marcus finally spoke, his voice devoid of any emotion. "Sam?" he called out.

Embarrassment flushed my cheeks, and I felt a wave of nervousness wash over me. I didn't know how to respond. It was a pity, really. I didn't want him to assume that I had been eavesdropping or that his relationship with Sofia affected me.

"Um..." I stammered, searching for the right words.

"Ring!!!"

Thankfully, my phone rang, saving me from having to answer his question. It was Elijah, calling to inquire about my whereabouts. The party was about to begin, and he wanted me to join him.

"I have to go," I informed Marcus, gripping my son Marco's hand.

"I can drive you," he offered.
