His Majesty's Mate
Author: Glad Fortalejo

Foreword

The light of the full moon was bright. The leaves attached to each branch of the trees were waved by the cold breeze. Her eyes roamed around. She was in the middle of the street. Jelca Stewart's shoulders shivered when an unusual-cold-air kissed her skin.

A groan nearby made her feet stop making steps. She cleared her throat when a shadow devoured her own.

She instantaneously swallowed when she felt the wind heat up. It was like the breath of the monster behind her. She was nervous, she slowly moved to look back. Her eyes widened when she saw the long and thick fur of the monster she had only just seen.

“W-What is this?” her trembling lips uttered.

Jelca lifted her stare. Now she was able to see the face of the monster. It had blue eyes that were both angry and manipulative; fangs as sharp as if they had just been sharpened; a large face and a long nose that blows warm air, but is scary.

“Owoooooooooh!” howled the monster while it was lifting his gaze to the full moon.

“G-God, s-save me!” she prayed.

She closed her eyes and she awaited the monster to attack her anytime.

She kept on forcing her eyes to be opened. She heard how people chit-chat.

“Miss Stewart!”

“N-No!”She screamed inside their classroom.

Jelca was able to hear how every beat of her heart raced against each other. She was dreaming. No, that was not just a dream. That was a nightmare. A nightmare that caused her to sweat and laugh at people.

Her classmates laughed out loud. They were all looking her way, and every one of them seemed to be waiting to hear how their professor had insulted her.

“Are you being disturb, Miss Stewart? You can actually leave this hall if you don't want to learn from me! This is Mythology and this is a mindblowing subject! Next time, if you want to sleep while I am having a class here, you better bring your bed and sleep until you can't wake up!” her professor, Miss Scott, reminded her.

She just nodded and fixed herself. She settled her sitting before letting go of a heavy sigh.

“Holydang! Are you crazy!? We are having a class on our Mythology class and you were sleeping! Are you not afraid to fail the coming examination?” Merfie, her best friend, said.

She rolled her eyes. Jelca stared on Merfie's way. "Darn this subject! I dreamed about a monster! And I hate it!"

“Maybe myths are somehow true.” Merfie's lips curved to make a wide smile.

“Myths are myths! No fuckin' way to be true! That monster in my dream isn't real either,” Jelca stated.

"Old people believed on dreams. They trust about dream bringing them preparedness. Do not underestimate dreams, dear," Merfie said.

Merfie stood up when the bell rang. This was their last subject. Jelca easily stood up and followed Merfie.

“Do you really believe that?” she asked, rolling her eyes.

Her friend canceled her next step and looked at her. "For the reason that I can see future, I do believe on what the old people believed." Each hair on her back stood when she heard what her friend said. Merfie's brown eyes were staring at her in a consequential manner, and it caused her to become anxious.

The image of the monster in her nightmare earlier flashed in her mind. Her stomach ached as she remembered how that monster's eyes stared at her. She could still feel the air blown by that monster's nostrils that hit her face.

“Are you crazy? Don't scare me, Merfie! You know I'm scared. I'm also timid of the dark!” she said to her friend.

Merfie shook her head, which made her frown. “Don't be afraid. It's not dark outside, Jelca. The moonlight is bright. Its light lights everything, and it made the full shadow of anything visible. So, you don't have to worry because the moon will look at you and watch over you,” said Merfie with a smile.

Her heartbeat got faster because of Merfie's words. The moonlight in her dream was also bright.

Occasionally she gets annoyed with this friend of hers. Almost everything she says comes true. Jelca even remembered when Merfie told her about the child who could be run over by a gigantic truck. She laughed at Merfie, but was horrified when what Merfie said came true. Not only that, Merfie also warned her not to talk to the man in black, but she disobeyed her friend. The man snatched her smartphone and wallet. Since then, she has been almost expecting Merfie to know what will happen to her tomorrow.

She took a deep breath. She held her friend by the shoulder. “Merfie, what will happen to me later?” she boldly asked her friend.

“You will be mated into a high-rank werewolf,” Merfie replied directly.

She took a deep breath. This is Merfie again. Now she can say that her friend's words will not come true. First of all, werewolves are not real. They are all fiction. He believes writers make werewolves to delight readers. Werewolves are fictitious.

“I think that's where you're going to go wrong. Of all the things you've told me, this is what I can't believe, Merfie. I'm actually laughing,” she said, shaking her head.

Merfie's gaze was serious. Her friend still had to try to convince her. She would never believe about werewolves.

“Destiny will never be escaped, Jelca. You are destined for a high-rank werewolf. No matter what you do, you will never avoid the path reserved for you,” her friend said.

“I suggest, you've stopped reading novels, Merfie Collins. You're getting addicted to it. Look at you, you're living with the characters' traits!” she said to Merfie.

Merfie gave her a threatening smile. She's never going to believe her friend at this state. No matter what else Merfie would do, she wouldn’t going to believe about werewolves.

“You dreamed about it,” Merfie reminded her. “But it is all up to you, Dear, if you trust it or not. I'm just reminding you,” Merfie added.

They were finally able to get out of the gate of Wolfords University. Jelca looked back at the large clock attached to the high part of the university wall. It's exactly eight o'clock in the evening.

“In that case, I'm ready to meet the high-rank werewolf you're saying. Maybe they'll call me Majesty's Mate in their world!” She laughed to herself.

“Whatever!” said Merfie rolling her eyes. “Won't you come with me? My brother is at the end to pick me up. St. Luke Village is still a long way from our university,” Merfie said.

She shook her head. “Maybe I'll go with you next time. Kate will pick me up. She'll call later, I guess.” she said.

Merfie faced her. They hugged and kissed each other's cheeks. “Be careful, Jelca. I have a bad vision for you,” Merfie reminded her. “Goodbye!”

“Yeah! Be careful too. Let's just see each other tomorrow. I'll let you know when I see the high-rank werewolf you're talking about. Perhaps he's the one in my dream,” she joked to her friend and waved her hands to gesture goodbye.

She had been standing outside the university for almost an hour. The teachers and other students have gone home. She glanced at the guardhouse, but the guard was no longer there. Maybe Mister Moore surveyed the entire campus.

Jelca called her sister, but Kate did not answer. Even her parents did not pick up their phones.

“It's annoying! Where is Kate?” she asked into the air.

She tried to erase the image of the monster inside her head that she had seen in her dream. The wind was getting colder. Jelca just hugged herself to warm her body somehow.

Her mouth and nose exhaled at the same time. She was tired of waiting. She also felt scared when she remembered what Merfie had said.

Even she doesn't believe on werewolves, there was still a fearful feeling that keep on chasing her thoughts. She just wished that Merfie was wrong about the vision she had said to her.

She looked at the university building and saw that the tentacle of the clock had pointed to nine o'clock.

“Oh no! It's too late, and I need to get home! I still have duty at three -thirty in the morning. I'll just wait for a taxi on the highway,” she said.

She had already taken step many times as her phone rang. Her sister Kate texted.

From Kate: I can't pick you up now. Suddenly, the tire of my car broke. Just commute first. Take care.

She looked up and stared. She wished that Kate had just said that earlier so that she wouldn't have to stay at this place too long.

Furthermore, she should have her car now, but her family is very strict and protective of her. Not only that, but she really thinks that she's more than a princess because of how her family treated her.

Kate texted again.

From Kate: Do not tell Dad and Mom about this. They might scold me when they find out I didn't pick you up. Have mercy.

To Kate: Fine. Do not worry. Just make sure you can deliver me later to the coffee shop. It's my last day at the shop, so don't worry, and I won't disturb you while you're sleeping anymore. Be careful too.

She breathed heavily.

The wind blew away a few strands of her hair as she walked. Jelca's beauty is unmatched by anyone. Her skin was like a peeled egg. His lips were naturally red. His shining eyes were like diamonds. And she has a desirable temperament. Her traits made the men admire her and wished to be her man.

--

Bryco Wolfords was just inside his office. He doesn't have the strength to go out at these times. He knew that this was the first full moon of the whole month. It is in the prophecy of their race that whenever the first full moon of the month comes, they will voluntarily change form and eventually become wolves.

Bryco closed his eyes. Last month, it was at this time when he became a wolf. He just wondered why he didn't feel any different about himself now. In fact, it was as if the lids of his eyes would fall off due to drowsiness.

His mouth opened, and his thin pink lips parted from each other. He yawned because he was too sleepy.

He reached for the curtain and peeked out. The moon was round and the entire sky was silent. He knew that by this time his race had changed and became wolves. He was always late for transformation. And he doesn't have any idea what the reason was.

He looked at the clock. He decided to just go home and wait for his transformation at his house.

Furthermore, he stood up and straightened, and it made his muscular body stretched. Likewise, he moved his head and his neck made a satisfying sound.

People didn’t know he was a werewolf. After all, he doesn't have the traits of a werewolf when he was in his human form. He is too used to pretending and living like a normal person. Actually, almost every werewolf covered and led by his family were accustomed to living as real people. Except for the opponent of their clan, the blacks. Black werewolves are violent and presumptuous, impatient and most of all they kill people, whether something has done wrong to them or not.

He looked up and closed his blue eyes for a moment. His eyes were like the sky above the blue ocean. He has a long-pointed nose. His skin was smooth. His shoulders are broad, and he has an athletic body. Aside from his captivating appearance, Bryco is a famous and popular businessman. He owns resorts, schools, and hotels.

With great speed, he immediately reached where he parked his car. He warmed up the engine for a while when he got in before he immediately drove it.

While he's on the trip, Bryco felt how his whole body warmed up. He felt as if sharp needles had pierced the flesh of his skin. “Why here!?” he asked his self.

He slapped his hands on the steering wheel before pressing his head into it. He could no longer stop his transformation.

“Urgh!” he sighed.

He glanced at his hands, which were gradually growing white furs sprouted. He peeked around before he opened the door of his car. Not only that, but he threw himself out of his car.

“Aaaaaah! I-I can't handle it anymore!” he shouted as he stared at his hands.

He saw that his nails were long ang sharp. He could feel how his clothes torn. Furthermore, he caught a glimpse of himself on the concrete road. Now he has become a wolf.

He looked up at the full moon with his mouth open.

“Owooooooh!” His thundering howl in the middle of the road made the leaves move. His eyes widened and he took a deep breath. He opened his mouth so that his sharp fangs peeked out as if they had been sharpened.

“Urrrrrrgh!” he growled.

He stared angrily at the woman staring at him. He thought there was no one in that place. Not only that, but he was wrong because the woman in front of him now must have seen his face before he transformed into a wolf. His breathing sounded so deep that it made the woman tremble completely.

He closed his eyes for a moment. After opening his eyes, he saw the whole shape of the woman. The woman's tears crossed down her face as she looked up at him. She also paled, perhaps with fear that prevailed in herself.

“D-Don't hurt me,” the woman pleaded.

He shook his head in response to the woman's words. He stepped a few times closer to where the woman was standing. Furthermore, he witnessed how the woman's shoulder trembled. The sound of the woman chasing her breath was also clear in his ears. The woman was so scared when he came even closer.

“D-Don't come near me! Y-You're not real! I'm just having a nightmare.” The woman covered her ears.

He wanted to touch the woman's beautiful face and tell her that he would not hurt her. But he knew in himself that this woman would not believe him.

If earlier, he was angry with the woman because he could be damned due of the woman seeing his face before he became what he is. Now he felt sorry for the woman. The woman could hardly breathe properly because of fear.

He lifted his right toe in the front and lend it to the woman's hair. Instead of settling down, the woman was even more timid.

“You monster! Don't touch me!” cry of the woman before running away.

He wanted to chase the woman and carry her into his world. But they can't possibly be together. He has a wolf race, while the woman is mortal. Besides, that woman would never love him.

Bryco was hurt. It was as if his heart were torn. This was the first time that he was fascinated with a woman, but the woman considers him to be a monster.

Bryco looked up at the full moon again and howled as if there was no tomorrow.

“Uuuuuurgh! Owooooooooooooooo! Urgh! Owoooooooooooo.” He groaned several times to tell the moon that he was hurting.

He wanted the woman,, and would do anything to see her again. Furthermore, he will not let the woman he chose go to anyone. Although the woman was mortal, he still selected her as his mate. Nothing can stop him. This was the first time he has chosen his mate, and he will despise everyone to have the mate he chose himself.
