Chapter 35 - Alex

My heart hammers against my chest as my feet slowly shuffle backwards. 

However, I don’t get very far and when a strong hand against on the small of my back stops me.  I keep my attention locked on the couple across the room, as David’s concerned voice echoes in my ears.  “Alex.  Are you alright?  Is something wrong?”

My breath becomes shallow and more like short pants as the couple moves and takes a step towards me.  I try to open my mouth, but nothing comes out. 

Why do I have to be like this right now?  Why can’t I keep my cold and snarky self out when they are around? 

Brandon’s soft, but worried, voice barely breaks through my haze.  “He sees his parents, I think.  I’m going to ask my father for help.  Have you ever seen him like this before?”

Paul’s voice sounds farther away and like he is in a tunnel.  “Only once
