Darkness. It held him in its cold embrace, stifling his body from any movement he tried to take. His chest was suppressed, air barely making it into his lungs. He tried to scream, clawing his way through the nothingness but its only results were his burning airways. He tried to grab whatever it was forcing his body lower into the abyss, grasping for dear life.

Finally, air filled his lungs, light gracing his vision. He was free. Free of the monster that was darkness itself, free of the claustrophobic space that pressed against his chest. Free from the never-ending fall to what felt would end in the depths of hell.

Am I alive? Alex thought, staring up at the ceiling. He turned his head a bit to face the window, the grey of the outside bringing reassurance to him. He took a deep breath, still finding it slightly hard to breathe, his head turning over to the other side to glance at the gaping door that led to the conjoined bathroom.
