Chapter 63

Becca POV

"Bas," I started, my voice trembling. "I..."

"It's okay, Becca," he interrupted, his voice gentle but pained. "I understand," he said as he turned to leave.

I watched him walk away, my heart aching with every step he took. A part of me wanted to call out to him, to wrap my arms around him and tell him how much I love him. But I couldn't move. It felt like my legs were stuck, rooted to the ground.

My mom's words lingered in my thoughts. And the truth was, I was still hurt by the thought of him not coming to save me. I had hoped he would say something about it, at least an excuse, but he didn't. And that hurt. I was confused, torn between my feelings for Bas and the lingering pain from the past.

But right now, there was another person I had to check on.

My heart pounded loudly, my hands trembling as I knocked on Lola's door. My throat went dry when she opened it. Her eyes widened with shock.
