Bas POV

"Hello, do you mind if I come in?" Becca's mom asked, standing at the threshold.

"Sorry," I stammered, stepping aside to let her in. I was so stunned I hadn't realized I had frozen.

"You just missed her," I added, trying to regain my composure, my voice wavering slightly.

"I'm not here to see Becca," she replied firmly, her eyes never leaving mine.

"Oh... um, let me get some drinks," I said, heading toward the kitchen, desperate for a distraction.

"No, I'm fine," she said, stopping me in my tracks with a raised hand.

"I'm just going to go straight to the point. What are your intentions with my daughter?" she asked, her gaze piercing through me like a laser. Her exterior was strong, but the rapid rise and fall of her chest betrayed her fear.

"I love your daughter," I said earnestly, my voice steady. "And I know you might think otherwise, but I swear I would protect her with my life."

"That's the problem," she sighed, her shoulders slumping as if the weight of the world was upon
