Chapter One Hundred-Three

Doctor Anderson emerged from the ICU, his expression calm but tired. "The blood transfusion was successful, and Aidan will be out soon," he informed them.

Karina, Zora, and the rest of the family uttered silent prayers of thanks, relief flooding their faces.

Back in the ICU, as the medical personnel who had carried out the operation began to leave and some nurses started cleaning Sophie up, Aidan got off his bed. He walked up to Sophie and gently took hold of her tiny hand, which now had tubes inserted. He exhaled deeply, feeling his heart ache merely by looking at her—the same cheerful girl who had eased his burdens and given him incredible joy just a few days ago. It broke him to see her lying motionless.

In his thoughts, Aidan wondered if what happened to her was truly an accident. He wanted to peck her forehead, but Dr. Anderson returned and gently urged him to go and rest in an empty ward if he felt dizzy.

"I’m fine," Aidan insisted. "Will she be okay?"
