They are in safe hands

I stepped towards them on shaky legs, my gaze taking everything in, from their bruised faces to their chest. I doubt any human would have survived what they did because of the wounds they had on their bodies.

I got to Mike's bed since it was the first one from the door. Touching him, I sniffed back the tears that threatened to fall like a broken dam. He didn't react to my touch, a first for him.

I'd never been able to sneak up on them because of how sharp and sensitive their noses were. They always caught me before I could sneak on them, which wasn't fair.

Leaving Mike's side, I went over to the others, touching them and hoping they would open their eyes to look at me, to tell me that everything was going to be okay. I needed their reassurance now, more than I ever did, and wanted to hear them tell me how much they loved me and would keep me safe.

None of them stirred as I touched them. Mitch had the most wounds and his lips looked like something he had bitten on countless times. T
