Fred remained silent after that, looking at me with an expression of guilt. I wanted to ask why he looked like that but didn't speak a word. Instead, I watched him, to know what he would say should he ever decide to speak to me.

He cleared his throat before whispering, “I'm sorry.”

I blinked at that, wondering why he was apologizing to me. “Why?” I demanded.

“For not saying anything when I discovered who was responsible for this. I knew he was the only one when the 5th student got killed. It was too much of a coincidence, but I was scared someone might rope me in, which is why I said nothing, opting to keep things to myself.”

“It's… It's okay,” I said with a smile, not ready to say anything more before understanding what the hell was going on here.
