“I am not sure we should tell you that. We made a promise to Emma long ago that we would never reveal our identities to the people she knew.” The woman said with a shaky voice. She had an accent, but I could not decipher from where. I smiled ever so slightly and said, “It is okay you do not have to tell me if you do not want to. My name is Natasha, Emma is my best friend. How did you know she was in the hospital?”

It was the child who answered the question. “Because of me. I have a medical problem, and I can only use certain donated blood. My blood type is Rh-null. So is hers. When I need a new blood transfusion, I get it from her. The doctors told us she was sick at my last appointment.”
