We tensed, expecting another round of torture or taunting from the rogue guard from earlier. But to my astonishment, it was Healer Abigail and Ken, Cassandra’s mate, who appeared before us. They both looked nervous but determined, holding a set of keys and a bag of supplies.

The shock on both our faces was mirrored in theirs as they took in our disheveled appearances. We looked as though we had been through hell and back, with our clothes torn and stained, our hair matted and dirty, and our skin bruised and covered with burn wounds.

Despite the dire circumstances, I felt a wave of relief crash over me at their arrival. In my nineteen years of existence, I had never been so grateful to see anyone. At that moment, I was so overwhelmed that I cried out their names.

“Abigail? Ken?” I exclaimed, barely able to believe my eyes. “What brings you here? How did you manage to slip past the guards?”
