Chapter 3 You're Not Happy

He merely wanted her to visit her grandparents. He was not going to divorce her. However, he still felt disgusted by her.

Amelia regained her composure. Her heart was filled with bitterness. Although she wanted to explain herself, Liam had already shut his eyes, so she remained silent, afraid of disturbing him.

She lay still on the bed. Her body became stiff and numb after some time. Amelia had a lot on her mind and couldn't sleep, no matter how hard she tried.

The next morning, Liam was already gone when she woke up. Amelia got out of bed and sat in front of the dressing table. Her eyes were swollen, as expected.

She freshened up and put on some light makeup. Then, she went downstairs, where the driver, John Miller, was already waiting for her in the living room.

"Miss, Mr. Prescott ordered me to wait for you here. I will take you home after you have had breakfast."

Even Mr. Miller didn't consider this place her home and wanted to send her back to her hometown. She knew he didn't mean any harm, but his words hurt anyway. Even an unintentional comment from others could strike her in the heart.

She forced a smile. "It's fine. You can leave. I'll go back on my own."

However, Mr. Miller did not budge.

"I have to follow Mr. Prescott's orders," he insisted. "Otherwise, he might deduct my pay."

Amelia frowned, knowing that Liam must have ordered Mr. Miller to send her back. She didn't understand why he insisted on sending her back today.

In the past, Liam couldn’t have cared less for her or her family. She got into the car, and the car quickly arrived at Bryxton.

Bryxton was the same as she left it. Even though she was in a small car, she could still feel the potholes on the road.

Her uncle, David Jenson, was boasting as usual. As soon as they arrived, he spotted the car immediately. Recognizing her, he put on a flattering smile and walked over.

"Lia is back!"

David's smile and aggressive gaze made Amelia very uncomfortable.

"I'm here to visit Grandma and Grandpa. Are they home?"

"Yes! I'll come with you!" David said and hopped into the car eagerly.

"This car feels so luxurious. It's so comfortable. Look at these cushions; they're genuine leather!" He exclaimed as he fiddled with the car.

Amelia watched helplessly. She glanced at John cautiously. It seemed like he was not bothered by David, but she still lowered her eyes embarrassedly. David could not care less as he continued to chat with John.

"You must make quite a lot of money driving for the Prescott family."

John answered him absentmindedly. His thoughts were hard to read as he spoke with a straight face. Perhaps John looked down on David, Amelia thought.

Even Amelia felt disgusted by her uncle's greedy actions. Although John was always respectful toward her on the surface, his actions spoke otherwise.

"Mr. Prescott has always been generous to his staff. Mr. Jenson, which way should we go?"

"Uh, turn right."

Finally, they arrived at their destination. As soon as she got off the car, Amelia was greeted by her grandparents and couldn't hold back her tears.

Her grandfather, Peter, had lost weight, while it seemed age had taken a toll on her grandmother, Maria. She realized this was her first time returning home after marrying Liam.

It wasn't that she didn't want to see them, but her grandparents didn't allow her to visit. They had hoped that she would cut ties with them after marrying Liam because she had an uncle that was addicted to gambling.

They feared the Prescott family’s money would ruin David, and he would not leave her alone. Her grandmother had once said if she didn't forget about them, her uncle would bother her for a lifetime and make her pay his gambling debts forever.

Maria was concerned about Amelia and only wished her a happy life after her marriage.

"Why didn't you listen?" Maria took Amelia's hand with tears in her eyes.

Although she reprimanded Amelia, she was still delighted that her granddaughter had returned.

"How is he treating you? Are you doing well? You look like you've lost weight."

Maria was clouded with worry. Amelia seemed more sickly than before. Although her skin had improved, she did not gain weight, maintaining her frail figure.

Amelia wiped her tears away.

"I'm fine, Grandma. Liam is very kind to me. You don't have to worry."

"Don't lie to me! I can tell that you're not happy."

This would have never happened if her good-for-nothing son had not sold Amelia off to the Prescott family.

Maria regretted it deeply. She blamed herself for not protecting Amelia well enough. She could see that Liam did not care about Amelia at all.
