Chapter 7

Samantha Downs ~

Thankfully, I am the only one who needs to make use of the elevator on this floor. I got in. On the controls were numbers one to ten. I pushed the number ten button and in a few seconds, the elevator began ascending. To be honest with myself, this is my first appearance in this company. I never really had anything to do with KressCo. until now.

I must admit it. This company’s taste for architecture can be compared to none I’ve seen. The structure of the building that I had seen in those files and what I’m now seeing, confirms it without a doubt. The cool conditioned air and alluring scents filled my surroundings. It’s enchanting.

At the number ten, the elevator stopped and opened up. I walked out. I am appalled to see all the things before me. This office deserves a ‘wow’. I took off my shades and put them into my bag. A section of the floor is reserved for waiting with a row of chairs. Most of the walls I see happens to be made of solid glass making the rays of the morning sun have its required sparkle in the floor.

The different ornaments that adorned the floor made it very beautiful and luxurious. Nathan’s office is a bit far from where I’m standing but I held myself back from going near it. They’re probably security cameras everywhere.

Nathan can be here at any time and I don’t want him to meet me under awkward circumstances. I dropped my shoulder bag on a waiting chair and went to the balcony of the floor. Surprisingly, it has one. The glassy walls extend here preventing me from feeling the wind from outside but even at that, the view from a high point like this of the city is remarkable.

Sam stayed there enjoying the view as she awaited Nathan. It didn’t take long before the elevator made a ring and Nathaniel Kress walked out.

“Like seriously, you make me wonder the use of the waiting chairs if people like you aren’t going to use them.” Nathan said making me turn around immediately to meet him right behind me with crossed arms.

I am too deep in shock to say anything. I am standing face-to-face with Nathan Kress. It’s breathtaking. The photographs of him are nothing close to how handsome looking he is in person.

“Are you going to keep standing here looking stupid or are you going to say something?” he said pulling me out of my thoughts with his hands still crossed.

Did he just call me stupid?

“I’m…”

“I know who you are!” Nathan shot interrupting me with a firm tone.

Didn’t he tell me a second ago to say something? Why then won’t he let me? I was just going to introduce myself. I gave him a rough glance and met his blue orbs looking straight into mine.

“… I am Samantha Downs.” I said trying to remedy the already awkward situation as I stretched out my right hand for a handshake.

“I don’t shake.” Nathan said walking closer which made me walk backwards eyes still on his trying to decode him. “At least not everyone especially ladies I haven’t met before.”

Why is he so rude? I would’ve known this was going to happen had I read the MS-word file on Nathan’s personality till the end. I am no good at relating with arrogant people. I can't stand them so just hope Nathan isn’t one of them.

“Don’t forget the reason why you’re here. For an interview and not to shake hands.” he added before he turned in swift steps. “Come with me!”

“Should I…”

“Just fucking come!” Nathan cut me off for the second time as he walked towards his office.

He walked in and I behind him.

“Have a seat or if you like, you can keep standing since you clearly don’t fancy sitting around.” he added reaching for his big armchair and sat down.

Without saying anything else, I followed him to his table and took a seat. I looked at him and found him staring at me with a grin on his handsome face. If only he knew my actual purpose for wanting to get this job. He wouldn’t have me seated in the same room with him. If only he knew I was sent by a Mafia Lord.

I stared back.

From what I have observed, Nathan Kress must be an arrogant brat who thinks so little of others. He is blinded by his wealth as well as his influential power that he thinks me and everyone just like me, beneath him.

“Can I talk or are you going to keep on cutting me off every single time?” I dashed breaking the silence. “If you like, we can also continue the staring contest.”

Nathan smiled bashfully. He stood up and looked at me with suspicious eyes for a few seconds before his lips went in motion.

“You’re hired! Just don’t steal from me or you’ll rot it out in jail. I assure you!” Nathan said in a tone meant to make me feel terrified but I’m not.

I am just really really stunned. Was that it? The whole staring contest was the interview?

“Sir, are you being serious?” I asked looking so confused.

“Don’t tell me you’re part-time deaf? Or are you just trying to get on my nerves?” Nathan said using a finger to run over his forehead.

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes’” I claimed standing up.

Nathan is a lot taller than I am so even when I stood, his look on me is still frightening but in a charismatic sort of way.

“Sir, I can’t promise you that I won’t steal anything from you. Basically, all I intend to steal is one thing,” Sam said with a cunning smile at one end of her mouth. “Your heart. It’s the only thing that seems to interest me.”

Did I really just tell him that?

“It can be yours. All you have to do is find it first.” Nathan said coming out from his seat towards me until he was inches away from my face. “Get me a cup of coffee.”

“Excuse me?”

“Get! Me! A! Cup! Of! Coffee!” “Which word can’t you hear? The cup or the coffee?” he askeed leaning closer reducing the space separating us both.

I understood what he said but for some reason, my body refuses to act. Nathan leaned in my ear and the next thing triggered my anger.

“Now!!” Nathan said forcefully making me give out a shriek.

“Okay! You don’t have to yell about it.” I said to him before I walked to the elevator.

I really shouldn’t have just said that to him. After all, he’s now my boss. As I walked, I missed a step and found myself falling to the ground. I don’t know why but I thought Nathan was going to stop me from reaching the ground but he didn’t. He just stood there and watched me fall to the ground.

“Do you mind? I could’ve been seriously hurt.” I said getting up by myself from the ground.

“And that concerns me how? Try to be more careful when walking with heels. Don’t make a big deal over something that isn’t. Remember, I can always fire you and hire someone else as it pleases me.” Nathan said still standing obviously watching me get myself up and laughing within himself. “I’m waiting?!?”

“Sir, thanks for giving me this job. I won’t let you regret it starting from now on.” I said putting myself in order before I made it for the elevator and it opened.

“What makes you so sure?”

“For starters, I know exactly what you would like to drink, eat and have for every hour of the day in this office and for seconds, I’m not alone.” I said as the elevator door closed and descended towards the reception.

“We’ll see about that. Keep up with this attitude and I’ll fire you before the day runs out. It’s a promise.” Nathan said watching the doors of the elevator close. “At least she seems good enough for the job judging by her looks and her somewhat annoying attitude. There’s something about her that made me give her the job just by looking into her eyes but I can’t quite put my finger on it.” Nathan added walking back to his chair.

He had his seat and brought out some folders containing files from a nearby file cabinet.

“Ulric is definitely not going to like this.”
