Chapter 6

Samantha Downs ~

“Briiing! Bring!! Briinng!” the alarm clock kept on going until I put the batteries to rest.

I had stayed up almost all through the night reading the contents of the files one after the other. I must’ve slept off while reading on Nathan’s personality. Nathaniel Kress is more interesting than I thought he was. Right now, my eyes are sore from lack of enough sleep but realizing that I have to get going, I forced myself up from bed.

I had made up my mind to keep my parents disappearance a secret as well as the whole deal thing. The cover story would be that they’re out of town.

Telling someone might trigger ‘his bad sides’. I reached for my phone and turned the screen on. The time is 7:06AM, pretty early to begin the day. I was about to drop it when the notification of a message came in. The sender’s name appeared as ‘J.S’ and I knew that it was coming from no one other than Jaden Smith.

I tapped on the notification and the message box became displayed on the screen.

~ “Hope you had a good night’s rest? I was watching long enough to know that you didn’t because of those files. Good to know that you’re awake. You have to wash up and put yourself in order.” “The interview at KressCo. commences at exactly 8:00AM for the position of a secretary.”

~ “Don’t worry about anything. I’ve sorted it all out. Nathan will be expecting you and just so you know, I’ll be watching.”

I read the messages with so much rage in my veins. The tiredness in my eyes went away and was replaced with eagerness to put a knife through Jaden’s heart. No, his neck. That way he’ll die slower and in far worse pain.

This deal is going to succeed in controlling my life and it all begins from the moment I agreed to it.

A voice note came in beneath the typed text.

“After all that I still have to hear his irritating voice?” I cursed before I consecutively played it.

~ “Hello Sam, so just as a motivator for the day, I’ll give you the privilege to hear your mom’s voice. She seems to really hate it here but I can’t blame her. This place is nowhere close to being pretty.”

~ “Sam…Sam… You have to get us out of here. Please do as he says. He threatens to kill I and your father if you don’t get that job. I miss you so much. I’m in good health but your father…”

~ “That’s enough! You heard her! You better get going and you better get that job, Remember, three months. The early bird catches the worm.” Jaden said before letting out a long laugh that succeeded the end of the voice note.

I took another look at the time and this time, it is 7:10AM. Time is running out. The MS-word file points out that Nathan hates when his employees are not punctual to work and he fires thirty-percent of all his employees that arrive late to work.

For a brief moment, I stayed on my bed seated using my hand to shield my face. Through her voice, I could feel her discomfort. I could feel her pain. I eventually stood up to get myself prepared for work. My first day demanded that I make a good first impression on Nathan.

I thought of all that I am to do when he begins the interview. What if I don’t make the cut?

I got into the shower. The cool water pulled down my fear and replaced it with some level of courage as they went down. I got out of the shower and got dressed in accordance with what Nathan was in for.

I wore the most astounding red gown I have with the best cleavages and even though I feel it is exposing so much of me, I went ‘long with it. The life of my parents depend on me getting this job. I’ll make sure to follow every single tip stated in the files that is necessary to make him hire me. I am time conscious- conscious enough to know that I had to get to the office in less than twenty minutes.

~ “There’s a house a block away from KressCo. with the inscription of ‘S.D’ on the white-colored gate. Henceforth, that house belongs to you. I have doubts that you’ll mess this up. For the sake of your parents, prove me wrong.”

“If only you know how much hatred flows in my veins for you.” I whispered into the air while looking at the text.

I gathered my things and taking one more look into the mirror, I saw that I looked in some ways like someone else. I got out of the apartment and locked the door and when I turned to remotely open my car from the garage, I saw a man standing in front of a Ferrari model car.

The first thought that came into my mind was that he was sent by Jaden to take me to the office for the interview but when I walked up to him, I knew he was going to say something that’ll surprise me.

“The boss said I should hand you these.” The man said stretching out a set of keys to me. “They’re now yours. The keys to his mansion and also, the car.” he added before he placed the set in my hands and without another word, walked away.

“I despise Jaden so much for what he is doing but I have to do what he wants and no matter how much I want to refuse both gifts, if I can call them that, I can’t.” I said looking at the keys in my palm.

I opened the car and got in. There’s clearly, no time to waste. I looked at my watch. I still have about eleven minutes until I’ll officially be late for the interview. I’ve driven a car like this a couple of times but none were mine. They were just test-drives some of my rich friends gave me. I’ve done a lot of test-drives to know how to actually drive them eyes-closed.

Putting my sunglasses on, I turned the car on and in a matter of seconds, I was on the highway. It took me seven minutes to get to KressCo. owing to the speed of the car. I made a horn as I approached the silver-coated gates guarding the huge 10-storey building known as the headquarters of KressCo. the gates automatically opened up and I drove in.

Probably they have sound or is it motion sensors? Either one, it’s pretty cool.

By the looks I was getting when I got out of the car, I am pretty sure that my outfit is killing it.

“Who is that?” I heard a man say to another as I passed him. “She’s perhaps another business partner?”

“Yeah, she must be. She can’t possibly be anything less or who knows, she might just be another girlfriend.” The second guy said and for a moment, that got me laughing from the insides.

Really? Do I give them the impression that I’m Nathan’s girlfriend?

All the while, my sunglasses were still on. I held my shoulder bag and brought out the ID card stated in one of the files that I should hand over to the receptionist at my arrival at KressCo. I got to the receptionist and without saying a word, I gave her the card.

“Good morning. The CEO’s office is on the tenth floor, the last. He hasn’t arrived though, but soon enough, he will. The interview would commence at his own time.” she said before giving the card back to me after she had scanned the contents. She gave me a clearance card.

“The elevator is that way.” she added with a friendly smile. “By the way, I’m Mira. Good luck with getting the job.”

“Thanks. I’m going to need it.” I said, after I had pulled out my glasses, to the receptionist- Mira and returned the smile. “I’m Samantha.” I gave her a feint smile.

I’ve gotten past the receptionist and so far, so good. I noticed that she wasn’t dressed nearly as ‘wonderful’ as I am. As I walked down to the elevator head on with my glasses resting over my nose, my shoes made tapping sounds with the ground and I can swear that a lot of people in the floor were looking at me.

I turned to get into the elevator.

I was right.

They are.
