I finished my meal, a sense of contentment lingering in my belly. As I made my way towards my room, a creaking sound resonated from downstairs—the front door being forcefully opened. My heart skipped a beat, and a sinking feeling washed over me. I knew that sound all too well. Max was back.

I paused on the stairs, my hand gripping the banister tightly. Dread coursed through my veins as I braced myself for what was to come. There was no mistaking the anger in his footsteps as they grew closer. I held my breath, hoping against hope that he wouldn't notice me. That way I can not talk to him ease I break down again.

But my hopes were dashed as he rounded the corner, his face contorted with rage. His eyes locked onto mine, and the intensity of his gaze sent a chill down my spine. Without a word, he stormed towards me, his grip like a vise as he seized my hand.
