A time came when Vanessa found her mate, but the Alpha Sebastian never wanted to let her go, demanding that she reject her mate because he had invested too much in her to lose her. They had dated for years and he paid for her tertiary education, bought her an apartment and a car, as a good sugar daddy that he was.

And all of a sudden she was going to leave him. He put up a fight and once even tried to kill the boy but didn't succeed, and in the end, Vanessa and Gage (that was the name of Vanessa's mate) moved in together.

Vanessa fell pregnant soon after, but there were doubts as to who was the father of the baby. Gage suspected the child wasn't his, and that strained the relationship between him and his mate a great deal, until he disappeared from her life one day.

Vanessa was devastated by his departure, frightened by the prospect of having to raise a child on her own when she was unemployed.
