Chapter 42: A Normal Adversary.

Mason.

I let my hand rest on Kai’s back as he slept on my shoulder. I let my hand soothe him, rubbing circles and humming with devotion like a hummingbird.

I walked into the living room and turned on the light because it was turned off and that was unusual.

I turned around and gasped in shock, dread scrubbing my skin.

David’s hands are tied to the back and he is on his knees. His face is beaten to a pulp, battered and almost unrecognisable. He has blood on his face and he is panting breathlessly.

Two guards are standing beside him. One of them is making sure that David stays on his knees and doesn't fall to the ground.

My father sits on the couch, his legs crossed. He is smoking with a glass of whiskey in his left hand and a gun on the table in front of him.

Oh no!

Fucking no!

Not tonight! Not this one night that I'm finally happy to be in love with somebody who loves me back and wants to be with me desperately.

I swallow hard but it doesn't pass my throat.
