CHAPTER 12: Questions

KATHLEEN

I left the building that evening with no answers. It picked at my mind. Why? Why would he donate so much for nothing? The only one I could see who benefited from that was me, and that was the part I was so confused about.

I had the elevator to myself and on the slow descent and I pressed my fingertips to my eyes, trying to work out the look of wariness on his face. And the odd little flash of guilt that shot through me.

By the time I exited the building dusk had fallen, the shadows of the surrounding buildings casting long shadows into the street. I turned toward the parking lot, where my car was waiting, and then hesitated, catching movement out of the corner of my eyed.

It was Edward...and Charles. Their postures were stiff, or at least Edward's was, his body tensed and still, as if ready to break into a fight at any moment.
