She buried her face in Vladek's neck. At least at that moment the man was her only anchor. And his scent was a great relief to her. The wolf advanced with more and more difficulty. The rain only threatened to get even stronger and with no evidence of ever stopping. He had already lost his own trail so returning in those conditions and with the human in his arms falling to the bone would only make the situation worse.

So after walking at least a mile more he saw a cabin with a stable. It looked old and abandoned but at least it was a roof they could take refuge in.
