“Mom”, I called out as she continued to hit Philip’s lifeless body. “Mom, he is dead.” I added as I reached for the lumber.

“Don’t let him fool you. He is pretending.” Mom growled, stepping back. “As soon as we are going to turn our backs, he is going to…” Mom paused, clenching her fingers around the wood. Fear, anger, resentment were blended in her voice that made my heart ache. She went through so much alone.

“I can’t hear a heartbeat anymore. Mom, Philip is Gone.” I trailed out, accentuating the last word. “He can’t hurt us anymore.” I whispered as I moved closer. “He is gone,” I found myself repeating the words, as I needed to reassure myself too.

I grabbed mom’s hand, entangling my fingers with hers. Her shaking hands hurt me once again.

We won, but at what price? We all suffered because of Philip's ambition and foolishness. “Come, dad needs us,” I whispered, pulling mom away from Philip’s lifeless body.
