I pushed Alex's apartment door open. Though his previous curse had seemed like he was behind the door all this time, he wasn't. In fact, the studio-looking apartment was void of him. A poignant stench of stale seaweed bombarded my nostrils. I had to hold my breath in order to shake the nausea it summoned.

The place was a far cry from Alex's last condo. A small bed seen in those movies with the prison cell, a bedside table that looked like it had seen better days, and a settee with a blue sheet thrown over it were all the pieces of furniture in the room. A small open kitchen area was near the entrance that looked as if it hadn't been used in ages.

Between the moldy carpet on the floor and the peeling paint on the wall, this place looked like a dump. Nonetheless, the room was tidy.
