Lucien's POV

The silence is deafening after Isabel and the old man leave. I feel the need to break it, so I turn to Adam and say, "We have to get out of here. We have to steal that boat and leave, before morning." I say it matter-of-factly, my eyes dark and emotionless. Adam looks at me, and I can see the gears turning in his head. He knows I'm right and he agrees. The old man walks back in, his face beaming. "There's no need to steal the boat," he says. "It won't get you anywhere. The streams all lead to the same place, a dead end." I feel a moment of panic, but then he continues, "I have horses, and I'd be happy to give them to you so you can travel by land." I breathe a sigh of relief. A horse would be so much better than a small, wooden boat.

I look him in the eye, searching for any sign of anger. "You're not mad that I wanted to steal your boat?" I ask. He lets out a hearty laugh, and shakes his head. "You're just a couple of ignorant kids," he says. "You didn't know any better." I feel a bit
