“I want to know how my daughter is doing, if she's fine or facing hell in that house, but Ken has forbidden me to do so." Zoe, Xara's mother, told her friend Anita.“Zoe dear, I think she's fine. But if you doubt it, you could go call her on a payphone; that way, Ken wouldn't know." She advised her friend.“I never thought about that; thanks, Anita." Zoe calmed down.“Have you been hearing from Mabel?" She asked the woman.“Yes, yes, I have. She's doing well with her husband in New Orleans." She smiled.“That's good to hear, but I have a strong feeling that Xara is fine; worry not." Anita tapped her friend's shoulder.“I would see you later, Anita; I better go call Xara," Zoe said, getting up and walking out of the restaurant. For the love of money, Anita pondered going back to her work.Zoe hesitated for a while as she stepped into the phone booth. She inserted a coin into the booth and dialled her daughter's number. It rang for a while, and just as she was about to give up,then she answered.“Xara?" She called with a shaky voice.“M-mom?" She responded, shocked.“How are you doing? I'm sorry for not calling or checking up on you, but your father forbade me from doing so." She confessed.“But why would he do that? Did he hate me that much?" She voiced out her fears.“No, no, he doesn't. How are you? How is Kai treating you?" She inquired?“I wish I never married him, mom; I am going through hell in this marriage. Why did Mabel elope? I wouldn't have been here in the first place." She said as Alianna signaled to her that her husband's P.A. was coming.“Ma, I will call you later. In fact, I would send you an address where you can meet me and we can talk. I have to go. I love you." She dropped the call as Zoe came out of the phone booth. It broke her heart to hear that. She checked her phone to see that Xara had sent her a message. It was an address for where to meet her.“Is everything fine?" Caleb, the P.A., asked as he entered the room.“Yes, we are just going to Alianna's house for a while. I would be back soon." She told him.“What for?" he asked.“Her cousin is back, and she wants to see us today because she has other duties to attend to." Xara lied.“Whatever you say, " he snorted and walked off as Penny, Alianna, and Xara walked out of her room. They headed to Alianna's car, which she sat in as she drove off.“That was a close one," Penny added. They picked up Zoe at the address Xara had sent to her. She hugged her daughter tight.“I'm glad you are alright, and I'm sorry you have to go through all these." Zoe apologized as they reached Alianna's house.“How come dad doesn't want you to see or talk to me? And have you been hearing from Mabel?" She asked.“I don't know for your dad, but we've been hearing from Mabel." She said as Xara's eyes lit up.“That's good. Tell her to come for her man so I can be free," Xara said as her friends nodded in agreement.“I am sorry that can't happen." Zoe suddenly said.“Why?" Penny questioned.“She's married, " Zoe broke the news to them.“No, no, no, NO! This can't be; she can't be married." Xara panicked.“Calm down." Alianna hugged her friend.“That means I am stuck in this hell for life, Alianna. I am doomed for life!" She hysterically cried.“No, you're not doomed; you've got us." Penny consoled her, calming her down a bit.“How could she do this? How heartless could she be?" Xara murmured.“I am so sorry, baby," Zoe said, hugging her daughter silently and sobbing.Could this get any worse? Penny thought to herself, rubbing her friend's back.Xara expressed her joy every time she left that terrible place to go to school, mentioning this to Penny and Alianna as they accompanied her to her car. They were planning to have a meal together before heading to their next class. It had been several weeks since they last heard from Kai, and she was concerned about him, although she didn't express her worry. He posted on F******k and I*******m to let everyone know that he was okay, and his personal assistant also confirmed that he was doing well. However, she couldn't help but wonder why he never called her to see if she was okay. "Xara, are you okay?" Penny snapped Xara out of her daydream. "I'm doing well," she said with a smile. "Hey, your phone has been ringing non-stop for a couple of minutes." She gave a mischievous smile to her friend, who quickly grabbed her phone to see who was calling. The caller ID on her phone displayed a simple "Unknown" tag, piquing Xara's curiosity. As the car sped away, Xara pres
“Hi, beautiful, where's my wife?" Kai asked as he walked past Xara. She had listened to her friend's advice and gotten a makeover. She cut her long boring dark brown hair to shoulder length and had gotten light brown highlights in her hair. She had also discarded her dull, boring and unattractive clothes for sexier ones. “ Welcome home, Mr Maximilian," Xara spoke out making his jaw drop.“X-Xara?" He called shocked as she smiled at him. “ You had a makeover?" He asked happily for a while. "I hope you're not dressing sexy for any other man, because whatever you do, you'll always be poor, boring Xara Wilson and nothing more." He stormed away. "WHAT EVER DID I DO TO YOU?" She screamed after him as he came to a halt, staring at her sobbing on the floor. "You agreed to marry me; you could have declined, but you married me anyway, knowing full well that I don't love you." He responded softly. "Do you think I had a choice?" She laughed. "Perhaps I should have run away like Mabel, mayb
Kai's attitude towards Xara came back to normal after a couple of days. Even though he didn't hit her, the verbal abuse was so much that she wished she could run away and seek shelter in another city. But she didn't have the guts to do so. She was worried about her mom and what her dad would say or do to her if he found out that she had run away. Mabel, wherever you are, please come and get your man. I can't stand this torture anymore. She cried to herself. She was tired of having hands pointed at her all the time. She was tired of being blamed for no fault of hers. She was tired of being treated like a piece of trash. “Why do you hate me so so much?!" She burst out to her husband. “What did I ever do to deserve this cruel treatment?" She further added. “I never begged to marry you, so why all this?" She sobbed harder until she was out of breathing while kneeling down. Kai noticed she was having a hard time breathing. He
For a couple of days, Xara hadn't seen her husband after what had happened. She hadn't breathed a word to her friends or her mom and they didn't suspect a thing. She behaved normally as if nothing had happened. “Sorry, I didn't--- Kai?" Xara called out shocked. Her husband looked dishevelled. It was as if he hadn't showered nor slept for a few days now. He wanted to bypass her and enter into the room but she blocked his path. She couldn't let him beat himself up anymore for this. It had already happened and the harm couldn't be undone. “Just let me through, please." He softly spoke as she made way for him to enter following closely before he shut the door in her face. “Kai." She placed her hand on his shoulder. He pushed her hands-off as he was about walking off when she grabbed his arm. “ You can't keep doing this to yourself, the harm has already been done. Just try to forget it and move on." She advised. “Just leave." He pointed at
“Kai's calling?" Xara asked shocked looking at her friend's faces. They hadn't returned from the Bahamas, they had a week more to return, so why was he calling. “Good morning Mr Maximilian." She greeted. “Hey, how are you girls doing?" He asked. “We good just woke up a couple of minutes ago." She explained. “It's still night here, I just called to see how your vacation was going," Kai admitted. “That's nice of you, thanks once again, Mr Maximilian." She smiled. “Your welcome, what are you girls up to today? Partying?" He inquired turning on the other side of the bed. “Naah, just some shopping, let me call it a girls day out." She explained. “Okay, that sounds nice. Anyways have fun and then take care." Kai told dropping the call. “Okay, what has gotten into Kai?" Alianna asked her friend. “I am as shocked as you are Alianna," Xara replied. “Let's get ready for our day out," Penny sa
“ You seemed so happy with Kai?! What happened now, why are you leaving now that the moment you've been waiting for is here!" Xara asked her sister. “Im sorry Xara, Kai is a great guy no doubt, but I can't, I can't marry him. I'm sorry I had to do this, look on the bright side you both would make a perfect couple." Mabel tried to console her sister. Kai was great but she couldn't marry a man who would have no time for her and her future kids. But with Mike, he was everything a woman wanted. He was there for her when Kai started sleeping around with other women. He was there when Kai wouldn't care a hoot about what his mistresses said or did to her. She needed to be with a man who cares and Mike was the right man. “I-i have to go." Mabel wiped the tears off Xara's face and left without looking back. “Why couldn't you stop her?" Her dad shouted at her as he read the note Mabel left behind. “I trie
“Kai Darling!" Aurora Maximilian, the multi-tycoon and Kai's mother called out his name as she entered the house. She had been in New York for a few months for business and decided to pay Kai a visit to Brooklyn before she headed back to Italy. “Mom?" He responded descending to meet his mom. “What a surprise, what brings you here?" He asked. “I came to see you, and that peasant you married. Where is she by the way?" She said referring to Xara “Probably in her room or somewhere around the house." He added dismissively. " And you don't seem to care?" Aurora asked. “No, I don't. She's just a burden and you know I am so against divorce there's no way I am divorcing her." He said. Xara was walking past them to her room when she decided to eavesdrop on their conversation which she wished she didn't. She wiped the stray tears off her face and decided to go and say hello to her mother-in-law. “Good morning Madam." Xara greeted
“ Watch out!" A voice said but it was too late as his body collided with the moving car. The driver sped off immediately leaving her on the cold lonely road. “Stay with me." A voice said shakily. She caressed his face before her eyes closed and everything went black. Xara woke up with a start. She was panting hard and she did the droplets of sweat off her face. Her ankle was much better as she had stopped using the crutches. She sometimes felt pain in her ankle when she stood for a long time or if she mounted her full weight on it. She took deep breaths calming herself down. What was that? She questioned herself walking into the bathroom to have her bath. Her mother in law was still living with them though she was supposed to leave two weeks ago. She was making life a living hell for Xara in her home. But as determined as Xara was, she decided to endure every bit of it. “Good morning." Xara greete
