24. Grief

Jake let Maria cry in his arms.  Jake felt uncomfortable because his clothes got wet.  But he couldn't bear to let go of Maria's arms.  He rubbed her back gently, hoping the crying would stop and tell her what had happened.

 "Maria," Jake said looking down.  Where Maria's head lies in her stomach.

 Jake finally let go of the hug, he crouched down in front of Maria, so he could see her face.  His hand moved to wipe the tears that rolled down Maria's cheeks.

 "What is wrong?"  he asked softly.

 "Hiks... mom, Jake... my... mom died," said Maria stammering.

 Jake was shocked to hear that, he looked at Maria again.  But he didn't see the lie in her eyes.
