Chapter 12: The fake engagement
(Emma’s P.O.V.)“What was that?!” I ask baffled the moment Mr. Beckett and Mr. Gleason close the office door behind them. What just happened? Did I just seriously pretend to be Leopold Beckett's fiancée? I can’t believe I just did that! I have no idea why he just asked me to say that lie, I only know I wasn’t able to say no to those puppy eyes of his... and that kiss... I was thrown off by that spectacular kiss. I’ve had a very confusing morning so far, waking up in Leopold’s apartm

Chapter 13: The lion’s den
“What do you mean you are going to move out?” Eddie asks outraged. “Are you seriously going to leave me alone?” “No, of course not, Eddie. I’m not abandoning you or anything like that. This is just temporary. My boss... he... he needs a full-time assistant for a while...” I lie. I wish I could tell my brother the truth, that I’m about to obtain the money to pay off his debt and make Alex disappear from our lives, but unfortunately, after everything that has happened, I don’t fully trust Eddie anymore. If he knows I’m going to

Chapter 14: The Becketts
Mr. Beckett senior and his wife live in a mansion outside the city. My jaw drops as we drive thru the enormous perfectly illuminated garden, it looks like a place from a fairytale. On both sides of the mansion, there are two enormous stone fountains that look like they belong in a public park, not a private home. “They are impressive aren’t they?” Leopold asks referring to the fountains as he parks his red convertible in front of the mansion. “My mother had them sent from Italy. Apparently, local fountains are not good enough for her taste,” he says jokingly.

Chapter 15: Lobster
Leopold clearly has no clue about what to say, so I need to intervene. “It was so sweet,” I say improvising. “He... he took me to this beautiful place... in the woods...” “You took her to our family cabin?!” Mrs. Beckett asks outraged. I look at Leopold fearing I said something wrong. He squeezes my hand in a loving gesture.

Chapter 16: Business transaction
The dinner seemed to last an eternity. I think that was as true for me as it was for Leopold; I was putting up with his mother looking daggers at me the entire time, while he was dealing with David’s passive-aggressive comments. On top of that, we are clearly not a very good fake couple, we kept saying the wrong thing about each other over and over. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Becketts conclude Leopold and I are in no way together, let alone engaged to each other. Luckily, this evening is finally over. “What we did tonight was stupid,” Leopold says as he drives us back to his apartment. “If we are going to pretend to be a couple, we have to get to know each other.”

Chapter 17: Mary Alice
I hold back a yawn. I didn’t get much sleep last night with all of our chatting and getting to know each other. It was hard for me to get out of bed this morning and it was harder to get ready without waking Leopold up. When I left his apartment, he was still soundly asleep. Of course, he is the boss’ son, so he can come to the office any time he wants. No one is going to say anything if he comes in late or even if the takes the day off. He probably won’t even come to the office at all today, which is ok because I don’t have the energy to be his assistant today... although, I wonder if he’ll still be rude to me at work now that we are “engaged”, I hope not. Even if it’s just for the sake of appearances, he must be

Chapter 18: The wedding planner
I reluctantly go with Mary Alice to ‘The Bride Couture’, the place is the definition of elegance. I’m intimidated the second I step in. I feel so out of place in here and I fear even the shop assistants know I don’t belong in here just by looking at me. Mary Alice doesn’t seem to notice it, she just looks at the dresses and she points at the ones she thinks I should try on.  “Oh, look at this one, Emma!” She says mesmerized by a mermaid silhouet

Chapter 19: Attracted to you
I go into the apartment trying to make as little noise as I can. Lunch with Constance turned into a day at a spa and then dinner and cocktails. Mary Alice is a really agreeable girl, I had a lot of fun today pretending to be her fake “future sister-in-law.” Now it’s almost one o’clock in the morning, I don’t want to wake Leopold up. I walk to my room discretely. At least tomorrow is Saturday so I don’t have to worry about waking up early for work.

Chapter 20: The flower shop
When I arrive at our apartment, Eddie is not here, only his mess. I clean up a little bit, put his clothes in the washing machine and I do the dishes. I sigh displeased, my baby brother is never going to change. After a while, I go downstairs and walk a few blocks to my favorite flower shop “I Fiori di Vittorio”, I have always loved this place. For some reason most of its employees are men and they all wear suits, I have no idea why they dress like that, but I like it, it gives the place a sense of elegance. I buy a dozen white roses for the apartment. I go back and put the roses in a vase. They make the place look nicer, my mom used to have flowers around our house all the time, she said they gave the place an air of coziness and I think she was rig
