A new way
"Leave me alone," I grumbled, pulling my blanket over my face. "Girl, did ya get your period?" Brooke questioned, oblivious to my situation. "No, she got hers a week ago," Blake answered, and then there prevailed a moment of awkward silence before he began stuttering, "I-I... uh... she... I..." I could just imagine the pair of tomatoes taking over his cheeks. "No need to explain, weirdo," Brooke grimaced. I could also imagine the face she was making at this given chance. "I-I'm not explaining.""Then what are you doing?""None of your business," Blake finally grunted. He was all sweet and shy until provoked. I could feel her rolling her eyes and driving her attention back to me. "Haze, come out already!" She pulled at my blanket, but anticipating her actions, I had my grip firm. "First you g

Avoiding the boss
Pushing my head in through the half-opened door, I flashed my smile bones at the manager. "Mr Cortez! You looking fine today. Did you get a haircut?"He blinked, his palm running over his short quiff that I had been seeing at the same shape since I joined, but compliments didn't have to be a timely thing, right?"Yeah, I did. Three weeks ago."I walked inside with a sweet toothy smile. "Means you look fabulous everyday."His face lit up as he straightened up in his chair, puffing out his chest. "Well, thank you, Ms Green!"Such a great man he was. So easy to content.I slammed a stack of files on his table, startling the glee off his face. "What are these?" he queried, furrowing his brows. "Files," I answered curtly. "I can see they are files, Ms Green, but what is my purpose with them?""You have

Taming the beast
"Ms Green, you either listen to me, or the consequences will not be in your favor," Mr Cortez spoke, enunciating each word slowly.      I nodded, licking my lips. My heart throbbed in the corner of my chest like a timid cat. "I will do as you say."     "Good. Do not, I repeat, do not go near Mr Kingston unless he requires your presence."     I nodded again.      "He is beyond pissed today." Closing his eyes, he exhaled loud in relief. "Almost threw the globe at me."     "But what happened?" I asked, curious.      "Well, I don't know much, but," He leaned closer and whispered, "I think it has something to do with his mother."     "Oh." My eyes rounded in acknowledgement.      "I will go finish my

Road to the lakehouse
"What the hell is this here for?" Brooke eyed the third backpack in the backseat beside her. "He is not invited." She pointed an accused finger at Blake."Unlike you, I keep things near for safety measures," Blake bit back while driving us to the location Mr Kingston ordered me to wait in. I stared at him with raised brows. I very well knew what flavor pancakes he was cooking in his head right now. He had been against me going to that vacation. According to him, Mr Kingston was a dangerous man, and I should stay away from him. But when Brooke battled against him, he had to step back. So he insisted on driving us there with an extra backpack. "You're not doing anything like that, caveman," I warned him. "I'm only going there to work, and Brooke will be there to take care of me.""She can't even take care of herself," he scoffed, referring to Brooke's clumsiness."Hey! At least I don't for

Competition
Rushing to the corner room, we came across a vexed Jaz. On noticing me, her jaw tensed. "This is my room! Take your filthy cloth out of here," she yelled. I glanced down on the floor where my hoodie rested now. A sense of heat rushed through my veins, burning everywhere they touched. I wished I could channel it straight to her face. Insted inhaling deep and exhaling off my anger, I stepped forward and bent down to get it when another hand grabbed it from behind. I straightened up to see Mr Kingston glaring at his sister. "What is this behavior with a guest?" he gritted out to her in a low intimidating voice that would send anyone running with their tail in-between their legs.Instead she let out a humorless laugh. "Guest you say? I thought she was here as an employee.""Jaz-""It's alright, sir." I cut him off, placing a hand on his arm. "It was my mistake. I should have asked first. I'l

His Past
With all eyes on me, I jabbed my fork into the pancake and ran the knife through, cutting out a small piece, then stuffed it in my mouth. The honeyed taste of buttery fluffiness had the power to remind one of their home, to fill their heart with fullness.  Just like every other day at home. Then I glanced at the plate of mac and cheese, glowing golden before me. Scooping my spoon into the bowl, I cautiously brought it to my mouth. Cheese oozed from inside and dripped from the sides with steam rising in an automatic smell. My heart beat rose for it was the first time I was tasting his cooking, and my God, was it delicious. Soft, creamy, spicy, crunchy even; a perfect combo of textures.  For a moment, I forgot where I was, what I was doing.  Until the clearing of someone's throat broke my daze. "You lost there, Haze?" Brooke asked, smirking like the wheels in her brain, was forming some

A Rude CEO
I brought the knife up and down in repeated motion and chopped the vegetables in imperfect shapes of matchsticks while my mind paced in another dimension of thoughts. The scandalous incident from last night kept reiterating again and again in my head, and my heated cheeks refused to cool down.    I kissed my boss.    I kissed Mr Kingston.    Oh my God! How could I let myself lose control? But what was more frightening was that he kissed me first, even more so when those dangerous emotions swirled in his eyes before I left.    Yeah, I left.    I ran like the hellhounds were behind me, like the world was coming to an end and not once looked back. He must have thought I had gone loco for he never once called after me like he did the other times I ran from him.    It was a sweet nightmare. My heart fluttered at the same time it raced

Babbling Bumbling Bonkers
"I quit," I announced and turned back to face the two beholders, watching me with concern filled eyes. "Yes. I'm quitting the job.""Go ahead. I support you, Smurfette." Blake threw his fist in the air to exhibit his version of support, jerking his body too much in the process and yelping, his hand shooting back to the heap of gauze on his nose. Rolling her eyes at Blake, Brooke glanced at me. "Err... you know you can't, right? You don't have a choice." She was right, and that deflated my determination. "Ugh!" I stomped on the floor. "I hate that Montero. I hate that Dimitri. I hate everyone!" While my best friend observed me with pity, my brother kept up his supportive hand gestures. "How could he? After what we shared last night, I thought he was a good man, but he...""What did you share last night?" I stopped, my eyes widening as I

Tight Spaces
The week was passing like a whoosh of the wind, and our pretence game went on full swing. From time to time, I'd catch him staring at me and other times, it was the opposite way around. The sexual tension lingered in the air, yet no one mentioned about that kiss ever. However, the strange glow on his face enhanced by the passing time like he was anticipating something good, best even, while mine dimmed. Something was going to happen that was for sure, but it would be favourable, I could not say. Two days before the occasion, Aunt Matilde dropped before me once again. The cheshire smile on her face, made me want to turn around and run, never looking back. Ever. But I was not so lucky, now was I? "Hazel, my darling!" she chirped in like a Weaver Finch, beautiful yet annoying. In this case, terrifying. "You've been working so hard. I have got you a half day break."   The news should have excit

The Banquet
"So you're going." I looked through the mirror at Blake, standing at the door of my bedroom. The surgical tape wrapped over his nose incremented the displeased look on his face. "Yes, Sherlock. What do you suggest? Turn down Aunt Matilde?" Brooke retorted while curling my free strands. In response, he only casted an annoyed gaze at her way. Even though in that one week their hate relationship bettered a lot than before, he was in no mood for her snarky remarks today."It's not like she's going on a real date with him," she continued. "Will you shut up?" Blake snapped. Brooke's nose scrunched in anger, and before she could give him more reasons to blow, I grabbed her wrist and slightly squeezed. Fathoming my signal, she huffed. Getting up, I walked to Blake and held his shoulders. "I know you're worried, Caveman. You don't like Mr
