Why must you always try to ruin my life?" I tossed my backpack on the countertop in the kitchen. Shelly didn't lift her eyes from the pot of sauce she was stirring on the stove. I slid on a stool around the island. "Is this the part where I would say, I don't know what you're talking about?" Her words sounded more of a tease than anything else. I glared at her back. "I'm talking about Alex. You—"She cut off my sentence when she pivoted on her heel with a large wooden spoon held out to me. She came closer to me with, "Taste this." Instead of demanding an answer to my question, I did what she asked and tasted her stupid sauce. A sweet yet tangy flavor spread across my tongue. I nodded and she narr

Sure, if my home was being attacked, my parents would want me to be safe. They would send someone to take care of me. I was healthy and fine. Yet, I had a Guardian with me. All the time. It was infuriating. What was so different about this princess? It took a few minutes before Shelly answered with a, "I don't know why they sent her without protection. It's not the norm. I plan on finding out when I get to the Kingdom." We needed answers. I deserved to know how much trouble this princess was getting my family into. "Good," I blew out. Shelly leaned against the sink and observed the ceiling. This was her 'something was up' stance. Whatever it was, I hoped it wasn't too disastrous. If anything, and it was serious, it would give the king another reas

"You know, I'm going to have to get you home before Prince finishes his class, right?" Alex expressed while paying keen attention to the stretch before us called a road."I know," was my grumbled response. The prince didn't seem much like a nice guy. Sure, he cared for his people, but his colleagues were left behind in his selfishness. I shared my concern with Alex, but he just kept on urging me to hold off on any feelings and try to get to know the prince before I judge him. What more was there to know? I even tried mentioning that the prince deliberately kept touching Sophia when it was obvious Alex wasn't comfortable with it. There was so much evidence that pointed to the fact that Alex had some kind of affection for Sophia.

The ringtone from my cell phone blasted through the room. It had for the past few minutes. There was a part of me who wanted to watch it ring without picking it up. The other part, the obedient son, knew the consequences of neglecting his mother’s call. She was a crazy person. This was the main reason she never rang more than twice. The first would be considered as a missed call. The second would be intentional, not even if it was not. Mom was never the person to piss off. If anyone thought my temper was bad, my mother’s was worse. And unlike me, she didn’t care. I vacuumed a nostril of sea air for courage and answered the phone, hoping my voice sounded and my face appeared chirpy enough. “Hi, Mom. How's the city life?”I forced a smile. Mom had a motherly sixth sense to know when things were going to shit. She often video calls to let me know she knew everything was going on in my life despite her location. Those calls were happenin

Sophie and Alex didn’t take long to get here. When the two mermaids were on their way out to the pool. I intercept them in the kitchen. Unlike usual, Shelly was dressed in the same thing Little Miss Mermaid was adorned in: shorts and a tank top. Shelly’s light blue matched Little Mermaid’s black. They looked as if they were more going down a runway rather than practicing anything that had to do with combat.  I cleared my throat. “I’ve decided it’s good that all of you practice together.”Sophie and Alex’s eyes widened. Shelly gave me a smug look. Of course, she would. She was the one who placed the wheels in motion. “You changed your mind?” the mermaid asked. The surprise in her voice did not go unnoticed. “Yeah,” I answered, trying to keep my eyes away from her. “You were right, Alex. It’s better we are able to keep each other safe. The only way you guys

The room grew quiet as everyone watched the prince leave. Shelliot didn't seem surprised, but Alex, Sophia, and I were. The prince had made it very clear he was not on board with Alex practicing with us. Now, not only had he changed his mind about Alex, but he wanted Sophia to train with us too. That was even better than the first plan. The smug look on Shelliot’s face proved she had something to do with the prince’s change of heart. This went to show the prince listened to the advice of his subjects. A Father often said a great King was one who listened to his people. “Okay,” Shelliot said, gathering our interest. “We should get started before it gets too late.” Her eyes met Sophia and Alex. “Can you two change into something you would not mind getting wet?” Alex glanced at himself. Sophia dragged a hand through the end of her ponytail. “I have clothes here. I think there are s

I strolled into the garage with Alex on my heels. It was almost sickening that he knew me better than anyone else. He knew there was a reason behind my decision to have Shelly train him and Sophie. Any other friend would have welcomed the offer with open arms. Not Alex, though. He was relentless and annoying as fuck. I started to open one of the back doors of my truck but paused when Alex opened the passenger door in the front. “I need a ride,” he threw over his shoulder before hopping into the truck. This was why some people were introverts. Friends were nosey and irritating shits. Without looking, I closed back the door and made my way to the front. I threw my backpack on the dashboard and climbed behind the wheel. A sweet familiar scent trickled up my nose. I glanced at Alex. “Are you wearing a new cologne?” He stared at me through the corner of his eyes. “No.” Then s

No one told me the communication box called a cell phone could be so entertaining. There were challenging things called games one could play. Some were harder than others. The creation even could allow one to watch movies or clips. Humans were so intelligent, they made the cellphone so it could also talk. For a small thing, the communication box was marvelous. It sucked that I could not return to the ocean with one of them. Maybe I could and would be able to keep it as a treasure. Even if he was not working. It would just become a trophy to remind me of my time on land. Mother kept most of her land treasures among her other possessions. No doubt, once I return home, merfolks would be gathering to hear my stories as much as they did to my mothers. One of these things would surely sell my story. Others would become envious. I used to daydream about land. It was far better than my fantasies. Sometimes far worse.

The princess was gone. What part of don’t move didn’t she understand? How was I even going to explain losing the mermaid to Shelly? She was going to have a fit. Mom was going to have my ass. I surveyed the parking lot. The mermaid couldn’t have gone far. She had no idea where she was. Plus, she was a small thing. Even if she was on foot, it had to be nearby. Unless the mermaid was kidnapped. A naïve, pretty girl like her would be the perfect candidate for human trafficking. All those thirsty, disgusting assholes, lining up to get a taste of what she had to offer. She would not be able to manage them. No doubt, she was still a virgin. Sweat broke out on my forehead at the awful thought. Mom was going to kill me. This was thanks to that bitch. Why did I allow it to get this far? I should have walked out of that damn lecture room. But, I had to fuck her. The same bitch who made my life a living hell.Gosh

The pillow moved and I pulled it closer. It was so comfortable. My fingers were hitched on something. Something like… Wait, it didn’t matter. I was asleep. It was nice to sleep, so relaxing. The pillow moved again. Could it do that? It became bright. Who the hell was in my room? Why did they open the blinds? I was going to kill Alex or Sophie. My eyelids flashed open. Bad idea. It was too bright. The sun. I moved. Water. I was… Fuck! What happened last night replayed in my head. My eyes opened again. The mermaid! There she was, looking at me. I opened my mouth and ingested too much water. I swam to the surface, gasping once there. The mermaid came up moments later with my pillow. She handed it to me. Someone blocked the sun. No, three people did. I looked up in the faces of my friends and my guardian. “Sleep well?” Shelly asked. It sounded more like a tease with a hint of irritation. I was not even s
