Chapter Eleven
“You think the brothers are keeping valuable information from us?” Christopher asked.Elaina had just finished recounting everything that had happened over the past few days.  Christopher had listened intently to her whole story not speaking until she was completely done.  They sat together under the shade of a very large oak tree.   Elaina played idly with a strand of her hair that had come loose from its ponytail.“You can’t really think that they would leave us in the dark about something that important.” Christopher continued his eyes dark.“I don’t really know what to think anymore.” Elaina admitted calmly.  “It goes against my nature to think that the brothers would do anything but protect us, but now I’m not so sure.”Christopher considered her words.  “And you did ask Brother Isaac about it?”Elaina nodded, “Of course I did a

“You can’t be serious.” Two face’s mirroring the same expression regarded Elaina as if she had just grown a second head.“Oh but I am.” Elaina said solemnly.  “But first.” She turned to Chase.  “I am still waiting on that apology.”“What about an apology for slapping me?” Chase countered crossing his arms. “I think that is a lot worse than doubting someone.”“It’s your fault for coming at me from behind.” Elaina lifted herself to her full height, which to be honest wasn’t much compared to Chase.  “You have no one but yourself to blame for that.”Chase raised his eyebrows.  “I still don’t even know what you were so mad about.”“I do.” Charise called happily from behind Elaina.  “I’ll explain it to you some other time.” She added catching the look Elaina was gi

Elaina awoke much too early the next morning after spending most of the night tossing and turning.  What happened with Chase was not what she had expected and it took all of her energy to not go back to his room and kiss him again.  Despite telling herself over and over again that she didn’t feel the same way he did, she couldn’t quite stop the strange flutter in her stomach that started every time she thought of him. After what seemed like ages she had fallen into an exhausted sleep only to find herself being woken up by the onslaught of morning light.Sighing she got up and half heartedly got dressed throwing on a long grey sweater that hung off one of her shoulders and a pair of black leggings.  Slipping on her boots she made her way towards Charise’s room.  She knew one thing that would get her mind off of Chase and that would be setting her plan to get ahold of Tonya’s secret book into action. &nb

“There has to be something else in there.” Charise snapped pacing the room.  “Any other passage explaining how to counter their attacks.”“No, I scanned the pages and there isn’t anything in it.” Chase said quietly.Chase and Charise had been arguing like that for the past hour.  Elaina too numb to say anything just let their words drift in and out of her consciousness.  If she could push away the shock she would honestly say that she was pretty proud of Charise.  Of all people she hadn’t expected her to be the one that wouldn’t give up and would want to find a way to fight back and destroy the enemy.“I refuse to accept this.” Charise snapped.  “It is just a stupid book, only reality can determine what will really happen.”“The elders wrote that book.” Chase pointed out.  “They have that mystical power thing going for them

Chapter Fifteen
Elaina stared out the window at the hills and farmlands that passed by.  So far they had been on the road for five hours and still not a single town in sight.Chase had insisted he had known where he was going since he had travelled to the other temples before.  Never being out of her own town Elaina had to take his word for it since she didn’t know the way.  Neither she nor Chase had said anything since starting off.  So many questions lay restless in Elaina’s mind, but she just couldn’t bring herself to wonder them aloud.  Chase had been nice enough not to try to start conversation, instead he was content in leaving her to her thoughts.Stars blazed brightly overhead, all them easy to see without the lights of the city blocking them out.  Elaina remembered being a child and laying in the woods while camping out, staring up at the night sky and thinking how small she felt staring at the un

Later Elaina and Chase sat on the hood of the car watching as the remains of the burlack beasts burned before them.Elaina’s leg throbbed but she tried to ignore it, instead she looked to Chase who still looked green in the face.  She was pretty sure that he was going to end up throwing up at some point, but he just stared ahead stoically.  Since stitching her leg up he had refused to look at her and she was beginning to wonder if his little crush on her was finally gone.  A twinge of disappointment tugged at her, but she insisted that it was for the best.A crackling sounded from the fire as the flames burst brighter, swirls of green and purple overtaking the whole thing. Elaina had never seen anything like it.The flames roared loudly and Elaina found herself sweating from the heat. Then just as quickly as it happened it was over, nothing left now except a small smolder.Elaina looked to Chase now who was stil

Elaina emerged from the bathroom steam flowing out in puffs.  She had nothing but a soft white bathrobe wrapped around her, her hair hanging flat around her shoulders.  Chase who had gone three days without sleeping snored lightly on the couch.  He still had on his dirty clothes and shoes.  A book sat open in his lap.  Shaking her head Elaina crept into the bedroom closing the door behind her.Alone she sat down on the bed and examined the room around her.  The sea green walls held pictures of the ocean, waves crashing onto shore, lightening flashing a lighthouse, all seemingly ordinary things along the coast. The sound of movement in the living room caught her attention.  Standing she snuck a peek, Chase must have moved and knocked the book he was holding onto the ground.  Sighing Elaina shut the door again and laid down, exhaustion finally claiming her.  The last thought running through her head as

Elaina didn’t know exactly how to get back to the Northern temple, but she drove letting her instincts tell her where to go.  On and on she drove taking no notice to anything passing by her.  Night turned into day and then day turned back into night.  Adrenaline pumping she continued to push forward.  The only thing keeping her going was her need to make sure that there was still time to save everyone that meant the most to her.Only stopping long enough to fill up on gas she arrived in familiar territory early on the second day.  She pushed her car for all it was worth urging it to go faster even knowing that it couldn’t.Finally she reached her destination, skidding to a stop she took in the scene before her.  No longer stood the temple of the white, instead flames roared towards the sky.  People ran in horror trying their best to alert anyone who didn’t already know.Elaina jumped ou

The death toll from Rathial’s attack was great claiming the lives of over two hundred warriors and all the monks including Brother Benjamin who had been ambushed by a Serpent beast while trying to hide.  Most of the older warriors spent the next day building pillars to burn the bodies of the warriors that hadn’t been claimed by the fire.  It was a tedious task piling up the kindling taking up most of the day. They worked fast to ensure that the pillars would be set ablaze at sunset, a proper warrior send off.  Whoever wasn’t busy cleaning bodies and building pillars searched slowly through the remains of the sanctuary trying to see if they could find anything remaining of their possessions.Elaina sat alone underneath a tree watching as people moved about.  Charise sat close beside her clutching her hand.“It’s almost like watching a movie isn’t it?” Charise asked quietly now her gaze
