Chapter Fifty-One
REALIZATION Sierra and Heather stood aside watching the exchange between Elijah and Pharma&Co’s CEO, Mr. Jason Hudson. Karisa and Roman stood behind him with polite smiles on their faces as the press snapped pictures.  “On behalf of Pharma&Co, I would like to thank Leek Enterprises for their support and a charitable contribution to the medical community. We look forward to a long, prosperous relationship.” The salt and pepper-haired man shook Elijah’s hand, looking pleased.  “Thank you, Jason. As Leek Enterprises we believe that giving back to the world which has given so much to us is important. We know that diabetes affects over four hundred million people across the world and countless

MEETING THE FAMILY   Sierra leaned against the doorframe and crossed her ankles over one another with a glass of white wine in hand. Roman, Elijah, and her father were watching baseball with more fervor than she’d ever seen before, making her smile.    “They get along like a house on fire.” Karisa came to stand beside her with a glass of her own and gazed at the trio screaming orders at the television.    “I’m really glad about that.” She glanced at Karisa only to find her studying her intently.   “In all my years I've never seen my son so infatuated by someone.” Her eyes narrowed thoughtfully, “Not even Caralynn.” She added, grasping Sierra’

COMING CLEAN   They entered the room with their fingers intertwined, drawing the attention of all four occupants.    “We haven’t exactly been honest with you guys.” Sierra glanced at Roman and received an encouraging look from him.    “And we felt it’s time to come clean.” He added, placing the open bottle of wine on the table.   “At least you really got the wine,” Lorraine smirked, leaning forward.   “Lorraine!” Bradley scolded, while the other two just laughed.    “G

ENGAGEMENT PART TWO Sierra strolled along the shore, watching the sunset, leaving the chatter surrounding the fire in the background.  “Sierra.” Evan caught up to her, dragging her attention from the phone in her hand.  “Hey.” She smiled. “You miss him, huh?” Sierra blushed and nodded.  “He’ll be back before you know it.” He assured her, but she already knew that it was the time in between that affected her.  &

EVERYDAY ADVENTURE   “Excuse me miss, can you tell me where I can find the ice-cream parlor?” Sierra jumped when she heard the voice behind her, she was so caught up in deciding what flavor of the sauce to choose that she became ignorant of the things around her.    “Uh, hi. The ice cream parlor is just down the road to the left.” The man looked to be in his early twenties with a little blonde-haired girl’s hand in his grasp.    “Thank you.” He smiled and leaned down to say something to the girl in another language, Sierra watched as her face lit up.    “May I suggest the double chocolate flavor?” She added before they could walk away an

TOGETHER AT LAST Sierra and Roman flopped onto the couch, both exhausted from a day of moving. Roman was lucky to find a nice third-floor apartment across the road from the San Francisco botanical gardens which was only five minutes from the new hospital and a ten-minute drive to Sierra’s house.  The old lady who lived in the apartment had a stroke and had to be put into frail care, leaving her children with no other option, but to sell the apartment in order to make a down payment to the nursing home.  “That’s got to go.” Roman burst out laughing at the disgusted look on Sierra’s face. The floral wallpaper that spanned the walls in the living room was making her cringe, not even her grandmother h

THANKSGIVING  Sierra couldn’t place how, but she found herself seated around the huge table in the Leek household surrounded by her family and his, as his father carved the turkey and his mother passed around the cranberry sauce.  “Done!” Elijah proclaimed, setting down the fork and carving knife beside the bowl. “Who’s ready for some turkey?” He asked enthusiastically, but Karisa held up her hand to stop him. “Slow your roll tiger, you know the rules.” Roman wasn’t kidding when he said Karisa was big on holidays, Sierra would almost say she was worse than her own mother, who looked at the set-up with excitement in her white jersey with a traditional turkey knitted on it.&n

ALWAYS AND NEVER THE RIGHT TIME Roman didn’t know why he felt so nervous, it was almost midnight and in the Leek household, everyone was sound asleep, apart from him. The little box in his hands taunted him as he watched the dark, star-lit sky, something about it unsettled him and he wasn’t sure why, but it had stopped him from opening it when Sierra tore the wrap off hers.  In the box was a little key charm with a note below it which read, “One moment holds the key to a lifetime.” She took one look at the charm and her eyes lit up, proclaiming that she would add it to her charm bracelet when she got home.

I LOVE YOU  The weeks passed by in a blur and before they knew it, Roman started his job as head of the ED at Union Medical Centre. The brand new building hosts a variety of specialised clinics such as an Oncology clinic, a Diabetes wing, a pre, and post-hospital care facility, and state-of-the-art maternity care. It has become the best round-the-clock medical facility in San Francisco.  “How was your first week at work?” Roman was still dressed in navy blue scrubs and trainers.  “It’s been great, getting to know the team and learning to work with everyone. No major cases yet, but the challenge is great.” Roman grinned, popping a fry into his mouth. They were seated on a bench of a popular fi

THE ICE CREAM EXPERIENCE Sierra keeled over with laughter. A little Indian woman was teaching Roman how to make candy floss, but she scolded him endlessly because he kept eating it. They saw the little cart when they got off the cable car and Roman dragged her over with fascination.  “Okay, no more, no more, we finished now.” She lifted the stick and handed it to him, switching off the machine in the process. She looked worse for wear after the experience, but Roman was beaming from ear to ear.  “You’re the best Aunty Rashida.” He dropped a kiss on her cheek and handed a dollar bill to her husband with a salute in his direction before he took off towards Sierra. Grabbing her hand he yanked her to
