Chapter 41: Breakfast, Dinner, And Lunch
Mimbi had never been so glad it was raining. Lady Numia had been wanting to leave for three days, but the skies had different plans. It poured for the better part of two days. On the third day, a light drizzle enveloped the camp, making everyone cranky and bored. She had even forgotten to ‘punish’ Mimbi for her insolence of refusing the clothes she had offered. The air was chilly and damp, so the other girls were ordered to stay indoors, lest they catch colds which could then go on to infect any of the Hova that drank from them.Even though Lady Numia ordered everyone to keep away from them, Mimbi noticed that some of the girls had fresh wounds from where a Hova had used her as food. Some sneaky guards had probably fed off them anyway, hoping that Lady Numia would turn a blind eye to some indiscretions. And the girls were probably too afraid to say anything if they even knew that Lady Numia was protecting them. However, it wasn’t the gir

Chapter 42: A Bright Light
Scarlett landed gracefully next to the two Hova. Prince Marcellus groaned, while the assassin finally managed to lift himself from the ground. He had lost one of his knives, but he quickly grabbed the other one and held it out in front of Scarlett. “I don’t want any trouble with you, Karaina,” he said, taking a few steps back. “Oh, but you’ve already started trouble by hurting your prince,” Scarlett said, edging closer to him with her swords raised.  It was hard for her not to take her eyes off Prince Marcellus’s body. A dark pool of blackish blood was already forming beneath his face. It stained his cheek, and his breathing was becoming rougher. If she had any magic, she would have been able to end this so quickly. But all she had were her swords. So she charged. The assassin was fast, as he had proven before while fighting Prince Marcellus. He swayed out of the way just before Scarlett’s sword pierced his torso. Then he took a s

Chapter 43: Burning
The first thing Scarlett sensed when she began to regain consciousness was the soft, cool mattress beneath her. She had never felt such softness in her life, and she wanted to stay there forever, feeling the smooth surface holding her sore body. Then, memories of what had happened to her recently began race through her mind.  This wasn't her bed, and she wasn't in Karai. She was in Arandana, and Hova had infiltrated Queen Edda's castle, possibly looking to kill her. Prince Marcellus had been wounded and she had given him blood, and then... then something had charred the Hova attackers in the blink of an eye.  She heard the rustle of fabric very close to her and she opened her eyes. "Oh thank Karai, you're awake," Voty said, opening the curtain around the four-poster bed.  "Voty! What happened?" Scarlett said, reluctantly sitting up. "Is everyone all right?"  The look on her friend's face wasn't encouraging.  "F

Chapter 44: A Painless Sleep
Mimbi woke up feeling like she had been run over by a prancing horse, one that had stepped on her and then danced over her with gusto. She had never experienced such pain, not even when she had been burnt by her fellow trainees or thrown back while sparring. The wounds on her legs and begun to heal, but the bruises and pain would take longer to subside. Trying to ignore the pain, she focused on her other senses. Her tent was dim in the early morning light, and the cool air caressing her skin was a blessing. Outside, the birds were beginning to sing. She also heard the stirring of the camp rising. Someone poured a bucket of water out. Another person was hauling things that clanked against each other. She managed to turn around and realized someone had changed her bandages during the night. There was a basin of bloodied bandages sitting next to her cot. Part of her wanted to burn everything to the ground. She was confident she could

Chapter 45: Prince Luca
Voty did not listen to General Luna, or rather, Prince Luca when he told Scarlett to come out of the bathroom wearing clothes.  "Luca!" she cried out, stepping out of the tub and opening the bathroom door. "How is Queen Edda?" "Voty! What are you doing there? Wait, I don't really care. Please get dressed," Luca said, turning away from her.  Voty let out a frustrated sigh and came back into the bathroom while Scarlett watched the whole scene from the comfort of the bathtub, feeling very amused. If it wasn't his cousin who was now fighting for her life, Scarlett would have stayed in the tub and made him talk to her there, just to annoy him. Or tease him. Maybe both.  But considering what Voty had said, about him being in charge now, she decided against antagonizing him. Luca was young, probably not a lot older than her. And she wouldn't wish such an immense responsibility on anyone.  "Are you decent?" Luca said after a few mi

Chapter 46: King Davorin
In the topmost tower of Castle Sang, King Davorin looked out into the city below him. The sun was setting behind the infinite blue ocean, but he wasn't the kind of person who noticed those things. His eyes were set on roofs, streets, and people of Hovania, his pride, and glory. He had built the city from scratch, turning a small, sprawling port town into a proper city with almost a million inhabitants.Today had been a long day of meetings, planning, and debating. But he was extremely satisfied with his council. Everything was in place for the upcoming, and hopefully, final attack on the realms of men.He lifted a copper goblet and drank from it. The blood was still fresh, and he downed it in one go. It tasted slightly tangy as if the person had been eating some kind of citrus fruit the day the blood was extracted from him or her. Soon, he wouldn't need to send scouting trips to get more humans to feed off.It was true that he had a big stock, over

Chapter 47: You Have to Leave
"You need to leave," Luca said to Marcellus. Scarlett's eyes darted between the two, sensing the hostile tension between them mounting.  "Oh, I'll be right out. I just need to speak with Scarlett," Marcellus said, giving Scarlett a smile. "No, I mean you need to leave Arandana. And you should be grateful I'm letting you leave at all," Luca said, stepping closer to Marcellus.  "I guess I can say what I came to say even with you here," Marcellus said, shrugging. "We both agree that I have to leave, but I wanted to discuss where we are going." "To find Mimbi and the girls," Scarlett interceded. "I think we need to make a stop before we head straight to where they're probably keeping her," Marcellus said, raising his eyebrows. Scarlett had the suspicion that this had something to do with what happened in the courtyard with the Hova attackers.  "No. You said we would go find them," Scarlett said. "The more we wait the bigger

Chapter 48: Lightning
"That's impossible," Scarlett said. "No one can wield lightning."  Marcellus began to fiddle with some of the knickknacks on the boudoir, examining the hairpins and accessories that the maids had been so insistent that Scarlett wear to the dinner party the other day. "Hello?" she said a little louder.  "Sorry, I was just thinking that we're living in interesting times," Marcellus said, facing Scarlett again.  "Interesting? You call everything that has happened to the Karainas interesting? There's nothing interesting in seeing the people you grew up with, cut to pieces and burying dozens in the same day. There's nothing interesting about leaving the place you call home to search for your best friend and children because they've been kidnapped. CHILDREN!" Scarlett began to yell, and she didn't care who heard her.  "You really do have a flair for the dramatic, don't you?" Marcellus said with a stoic look on h

Chapter 49: The God Of Tears
After climbing a spiral staircase that hugged the stone walls of the tower, they made it to a circular room that somehow was very fitting for Prince Marcellus. It was full of telescopes, books, and strewn about papers and maps.  "What is this place?" Scarlett asked once Marcellus closed the heavy wooden door behind him.  "They moved me here from the dungeons. It was just as messy as you see it now," he said, shrugging. "I'm guessing it was some scholar's room and is now the temporary guest room of prisoners they don't want to keep too close to the castle, but also not in the dungeons." He set the book down on a desk whose surface was barely visible because of how much clatter covered it.  "Technically, the language is called Faeish, as those who wrote it called themselves Fae. We call them elves because they no longer exist, and they were from a time that Hovania was somewhere else," Marcellus said, taking a seat on the chair in front o

Chapter 50: King Luca Utherian
Edda's hand was beginning to get cold despite Luca holding it in his. He didn't know how long he had been sitting on the bed by her side, but he didn't want to let go. She looked asleep, albeit a little pale, as if she was bound to wake up any moment now. But no amount of wishful thinking was going to bring her back.  Luca was no stranger to death; he had become a soldier at thirteen and captain of the Golden Company at seventeen. He sat with many a soldier until they gave their last breaths. But Edda was her aunt, and the closest relative he had. Even if they had grown distant throughout the years—she being too busy ruling the kingdom and him with his soldiers—she was family, nevertheless. The door behind him opened and the soldier part of his brain told him he had to turn around immediately. Rule number one: never give your back to a door when you're vulnerable. Especially now when the kingdom was without a monarch. He didn't think anyone would oppos
